Product Description

This is not an act! He is considered to be in the same class of action hero as Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, however, Steven Seagal isn't just an action hero in the movies. For almost 20 years, he has been working as a fully commissioned deputy with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff s Office in Louisiana. In addition to going out on patrol, Seagal is an expert marksman who has worked with their SWAT team and has instructed Jefferson Parish officers in firearms and hand-to-hand combat. Steven Seagal: Lawman will allow fans to ride shotgun with Seagal as he and his hand-selected elite team of deputies respond to crimes in progress. Then, when Seagal goes off duty, the cameras will continue following him as he pursues his many ventures, including musical performances and philanthropic efforts in Jefferson Parish and New Orleans.

The Way of the Gun
Lawman, Sheriff Deputy Steven Seagal and his team capture an armed carjacker after a high-speed chase and tackle a convicted felon packing a pistol. In between these impressive busts, Seagal, the world-class marksman, teaches a fellow team member amazing Zen shooting techniques, techniques everyone on his team will need to survive the dangerous streets of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.

Too Young to Die
Steven and his team get a call to the scene of a car accident involving a two-year-old. They quickly discover that things aren't quite what they seem. Later, Steven shows some tough-love to a teenager hiding a deadly sawed-off shotgun. While off-duty, Steven visits the New Orleans Children’s Hospital cancer ward and is so touched by the kids that he straps on his blues guitar and throws a benefit concert to raise money for the hospital.

A Parish under Siege
It’s Friday night in Jefferson Parish and a call comes in for a near fatal car crash. Two men are rushed to the hospital while Steven and his guys search for other possible victims. Steven tries to prevent another horrendous crash by sending a couple of men walking home when he finds a bottle of rum in their car. And later, the squad meets up with SWAT to help deal with an equally dangerous threat: rodents that are undermining the Parish’s all important levee system.

Deadly Hand
After a close call chasing a suspect with a gun, Aikido master Steven Seagal teaches his team of sheriff’s deputies some self-defence and weapons retention techniques. Back out on patrol, they get called to a parking lot brawl. They detain the suspects, but one resists arrest and kicks out a patrol car window. Later, Steven encounters two belligerent men with a gun. The members of Steven’s team are glad they’ve been trained by the best.

Narc Force
In this episode of Lawman, Deputy Chief Steven Seagal and his team join the narcotics unit for an undercover sting on a drug dealer. But not everyone is bad. Later, when three suspicious young men prove themselves to be law-abiding citizens, Steven invites them to a big Sheriff’s office picnic where he and the SWAT team demonstrate an exciting hostage rescue.

Street Justice
Deputy Chief Steven Seagal and his team get word that there may be some drug use at a local motel and there is: crack cocaine. It’s a busy night, first the motel bust and then two other crack-related stops. The next day Steven teaches martial arts to a group of young people. He hopes to instil in them the discipline and self-confidence they need to stay away from the drugs he sees on the streets every day.

Killer Canines
Deputy Chief Steven Seagal and his team get a call for a burglary-in-progress and rush to the scene. They call in the K-9 Unit to search for a suspect who may still be in the home. Later, Steven apprehends a man who broke into a woman’s house while fleeing from the police. Steven then takes measures to defend his own home: guard dogs. If Steven can get his two aggressive, alpha males to work well together, he knows he’ll have a canine protection team that can take on any intruder.

Crack War
The war on drugs continues on two fronts. First, Deputy Chief Steven Seagal and his team, responding to a routine disturbance call, find a huge stash of drugs and take a big bite out of a drug dealer’s business. Second, Steven and the guys cheer for a fellow officer as he competes in a best legs contest to raise money for a local drug rehabilitation centre.

The Student becomes the Master
Be it apprehending suspects or making sure a woman is safe in her home, Deputy Chief Steven Seagal and his team patrol the streets of Jefferson Parish in honour of their former boss, the late Harry Lee. When a man is beaten by an intruder, the team catches the suspect and works to sooth the community, just as Harry would have wanted. Later, the time has come to induct a new sheriff, Newell Norman, and Steven is confident that Newell is the right man for the job.

Firearms of the Fury
Steven and his team bust a suspect fleeing with a loaded .44 magnum and are called to the scene of a young man shot by a shotgun. With all these guns around, Steven and his team know they need to sharpen their street skills. They head to the best training they can get: a comprehensive computerized crime simulator and “real world” shoot house. Later, when a routine traffic stop takes a potentially deadly turn, Steven is glad he and his team are so well prepared.

Medicine Man
Deputy Chief Steven Seagal's on patrol so all the criminals run and hide. That’s exactly what happens when a suspicious person call leads to an exciting chase that has Steven and his team scouring yards. Later, they face a cat and mouse game as they search a dark neighbourhood for two more runners. All the running leaves Colonel John Fortunato with a knee injury. Steven takes him to a Chinese acupuncturist where he shares his knowledge of Chinese medicine and tries to turn a skeptical cop into a true believer.

To Live or Die
Deputy Chief Steven Seagal and his team find themselves in a desperate situation when two men are robbed and shot. Steven tries to keep the victims calm until the ambulance gets there, but it’s not clear if the men will live. While not chasing down bad guys, Steven and his partner Johnny find themselves in another desperate situation when they help rebuild a home for a family who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina.

Ruthless Judgement
The night starts off badly as Deputy Chief Steven Seagal and his team rush to the scene of a man killed in a drive-by. Minutes later they race to another shooting: a man found dead in his car. Two homicides in less than an hour puts the unit on high alert and when they catch four young men out late, Steven has some stern words. He then gets down right harsh the next night when he finds two of them carrying drugs. But time is up for Steven, who has to get back to Hollywood - it’s time to make his next movie.

The Seagal legend grows. How does one man fit all of this in!

In the first episode we get to see Segal shoot the head off a match. "sometimes I can light it" he says.

In the second we get to see Seagal training his attack dogs ("protection for my family" he says, like anyone would try and hurt Seagal's family after seeing what happens in Out for Justice and every other Segal film)

In the third episode we get to see Seagal's blues band Thunderbox(playing a charity gig, natch).

Apart from that it is basically Police camera action with Steven Seagal surreally in every tape. Basically the cops drive down to the same black neighbourhood every episode and pick up some hoods acting suspiciously. Seagal seems to have special crime vision that zeroes in on felons. Seagal attempts to instill some zen philosophy into the drunk criminals.

Previously I had assumed that Seagal's accent was related to him coming from the deep south, but none of the cops or criminals speak like him, so that remains a mystery.

Always bizarre to see US gun laws in effect. Seagal picks up a guy with a loaded handgun in his back pocket. However, it turns out that he legally bought it so he's perfectly entitled to wander around with it, and Seagal sends him on his way with an apology for wasting his time. Another guy has an illegal handgun, but still only gets a suspended sentence (minimum 5 years over here!). Seagal busts and arrests another guy for not paying his child support ("mothers need that money brother" he says).

This series is fascinating for any fan of Steven Seagal. It gives an insight into the man, it shows him at work and at home, in various situations. It would have been nice to see the great man more hands on, but this is reality and what was shot was what was happening. It goes again to show that Seagal has so many fascinating aspects to his life. I thoroughly enjoyed viewing this series and hope there will be another one.

I am a great believer in television and probably watch more than I should. Television can be an outstanding medium, if you don't believe me get online and buy yourself "Our Friends In The North" or "Boys From The Blackstuff", you'll laugh, you'll cry, it'll change your life.

I'm not an elitist though, I'm not ashamed to say I have watched Channel Five. For example I tune in for The Mentalist every week and am eagerly awaiting the spin off series where every single case is dismissed as entrapment at an evidentiary hearing.

I first saw Steven Seagal: Lawman on Five USA, a channel which is to CSI what Dave is to Top Gear. The premise is simple, aikido expert, blues guitarist, media mogul, animal rights activist, actor and all round renaissance man Seagal plays a reserve deputy sherrif in Jefferson County Louisiana, the plot follows him as he deals out his own particular brand of justice to the local yahoos and good ole boys.

OK we're with you so far I hear you say, but who's the baddie? Is it Tommy Lee Jones again!? Does he do the knife fighting thing? Is he teamed up with someone who once posed for playboy? No my friends, for this is real life, real police work and quite frankly a big fat disappointment.

There are several reasons for this, firstly Seagal, disappointing or not, is big and fat. Tommy Lee Jones would win this time for sure. The only thing giving him a more svelte appearance is his rotund fellow officers who all clearly know their stuff better than Steve but, quite kindly I think, let him join in. So what does real police work entail? Foiling bank robberies? Solving murders? No. In the episode I watched the SWAT team spent the night shooting rats, laughing in Seagal's face for not joining in their deranged, wild eyed bloodlust due to his buddhist beliefs. The rest of the night was spent pulling over drunk drivers and giving them a brief scolding before calling long suffering wives and girlfriends to pick them up.

In 2008 404 people were killed in Louisiana in alcohol related traffic incidents.

I mention this statistic because I think it would make better use of Seagal's talents for him to smash their cars off the road screaming "stop in the name of Steven Seagal" before heading back to the bar and re-enacting the fight scene from "On Deadly Ground."

It would certainly make better television.
