Book Description

31 July 2006 Stern Portfolio (Book 44)
One of New York s most prominent fashion photographers, Steven Klein s distinctive photographs have appeared in American Vogue, ID and Arena, among many others. His advertising clients include Calvin Klein, Nike and Pepe Jeans. Klein s signature style is audacious and aims to disturb our complacency. Unintimidated by the gloss and glitz of contemporary celebrity and fashion, Klein dares to cast stars such as Brad Pitt or Claudia Schiffer as denizens of a murky twilight world. His settings might at first seem run-down, or imperfect, yet each is carefully composed with its own complex code of aesthetics.

4.0 out of 5 stars just aswell it's cheap 6 July 2007
I've become a big fan of klein's work lately, and cannot believe there are no true published books of his work seeing as how much he has done and how long he has been around. I was pleased with this book but mainly because it allowed me to have large images of his work to browse, however, since this selection isn't chosen by himself, it's exactly all the images you see on [...] nothing more, nothing less. I was very dissapointed to not see anything slightly harder to find or more unusual, since it's simply a representation of his most popular work. For roughly 9 though its still good value for money and i'd recommend it, but i'm holding my breath for a large book, lachapelle's heaven to hell proved it can done for a good price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Expected 9 Jan 2007

This is a good, yet brief summary of Steven Klein's work. His photographs have a raw, provocative energy and this magazine/portfolio is a nice representation of it. I am simply just a big fan of his work and wish there was more. I'm waiting for a book to come out with his full body of work. Until then, this will do.

5.0 out of 5 stars GLITTER AND DOOM 23 Feb 2008

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Another exciting edition in a series of magazine format portfolios focusing on influential fashion/portrait photographers. Mr.Steven Klein's photography continues where Mr. Helmut Newton left off...imagining a world where the impossibly beautiful people are often dressed in fetish-couture and theatrically posed in horrific circumstances or some oddly alienating situations, often with a toxic hint of erotic satisfaction in the air. A safe, warm, fuzzy or cozy world is something Mr.Klein seems determined never to enter...and succeeds masterfully. Often unsettling. Always perversely glamorous. It's not easy to shoot the same, stale "it" models and celebs that overpopulate the newsstands and still be able to make a stunningly fresh and darkly provocative image. It speaks of his unwavering fantasy, psychological insight, research, eye for detail and assembling the best creative team to realize his vision. It's abit terrifying to think who may be his successor...

if you love the photos by steven klein in vogue and W magazine, you will feel dissatisfied, for every twistedly great photo there are five homoerotic filler photos, i wanted to keep this booklet, but i was just disaponinted.
