Product Description

Product Description

Written with characteristic Berkoff flair and an understanding of the subtle power and violence of the English language, this second collection of his plays includes Decadence, described by the Guardian as being 'enthused with Berkoff's violent, imagist, vivid wordplay'. The collection also includes Kvetch, Acapulco, Harry's Christmas, Brighton Beach Scumbags, Dahling You Were Marvellous, Dog and Actor, and is introduced by the author.

About the Author

'There is no one like Berkoff and there'll never be another.' Daily Mail$$$Steven Berkoff was born in Stepney, East London and started acting at the City Literary Institute when he was 19. Following more training at the Webber Douglas School of Drama, he worked extensively in repertory theatre in England and Scotland - doing every job from understudy to stage management. In 1968 he formed his own company, the London Theatre Group. Through mime, gymnastics and voice, the Group liberated themselves from the conventions of mainstream theatre and started to evolve an innovative, more integrated theatrical language. Berkoff's encounter with the mime artist Jacque le Coq in Paris was seminal in this.$$$Steven Berkoff's plays include East, West, Sink the Belgrano!, Decadence, Kvetch, Acapulco, Ritual in Blood and Oedipus, which Faber publishes in Steven Berkoff: Plays 1. Faber also publishes Berkoff's The Secret Love Life of Ophelia and his autobiography, Free Association, as well has the theatre books I am Hamlet, Overview and Meditations on Metamorphosis. Among Berkoff's film credits are Octopussy, Beverly Hills Cop and his own production of Decadence.

I purchased these plays because I'm in an amateur dramatic club and we are always on the look out for material. I liked the sound of Harry's Christmas and found it thought provoking and easy to relate to.
The play I liked the best, however, was DOG. This piece deals with emotive issues and may well cause contention. It's quite shocking with very strong language indeed. This language, however, is not gratuitous and, moreover, in my opinion the play could not be performed without it; it is esential.
I enjoyed these plays, they do not shy away from serious issues and are thought provoking, humorous and well written.
