From the days when his first cartoon about the dysfunctional sci-fi cult hero Captain Star appeared in the New Musical Express, through to his weekly cartoon in The Guardian today, Steven Appleby has reminded and reassured his readers that it is the very normality of life that is inexplicably odd and funny.
As well as thousands of cartoons for newspapers and magazines including The Oldie, Tatler, The Observer, The Times, Sunday Telegraph, The New York Times, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Die Zeit and many others, his works over the years include: the animated television series Captain Star; the musical play Crocs In Frocks (with Teresa Early & Roger Gosling); over 20 books, including Mr Concerned's Talking Book of Home Therapy and Jim - the Nine Lives Of A Dysfunctional Cat; the series, Steven Appleby's Normal Life, for BBC Radio 4, as well as paintings, prints and ceramics for numerous group and one-man exhibitions.
Steven is currently drawing Loomus every Saturday for The Guardian; working on a graphic novel; making an art installation and contributing to a series of animated films (animated and directed by Linda McCarthy of Tiny Elephants Ltd) based on his cartoon strip Small Birds Singing. Steven's latest book is Steven Appleby's Guide To Life, published by Guardian Books, October 2012. The Coffee Table Book Of Doom (with Art Lester), was published by Square Peg in 2011.
