Product Description

Product Description

Known for his original vision, Hedi Slimane brings a simple, spare grace to the worlds of photography and fashion. Alternating melancholy and hope, Slimane's images are composed with great precision. The classical lighting and compositions are paired with dark, intriguing narratives. Influenced by many genres, Slimane's vision is fresh and tinged by a romantic sensibility. As with his work as creative director at Dior Homme, his masterly photographs are superbly crafted and sublime. Slimane finds inspiration in the diverse realms of pop culture, nature, history--and the human form. This varied collection is sure to inspire. His subjects include Pete Doherty, Kate Moss and Lady Gaga--to mention a few.

This is the Hedi Slimane installment of the Stern Portfolio series, known to many photobook collectors. I also collect this series, but to be honest, for every great issue, there is at least one issue with boring and superficial "high-end" photos from established photographers such as Lagerfeld. Well, meanwhile Hedi Slimane is also mainstream, but he has his own style and vision, and this issue of the Portfolio series represents it very well. People who know the series also know that there are sometimes really bad layouts, but not in this issue. You even get bigger pictures than in the overpriced "Anthology of a Decade" and the printing is very good as well. Of course this is more or less a random collection with no certain topic, there is no real development, it's not a monothematic, cohesive photobook in the Parr/Badger sense ( well of course apart from Mr. Slimane's usual topics youth & music). Furthermore, there surely won't be all your personal highlights from the the photographer's homepage (which I highly recommend), it's not possible in 100 pages. I also have the "Anthology", but even in those 700 pages I would have included different pictures, but that's another topic.
The only criticism I have is a stylistic issue: the photographer really likes to photograph people from the back, and this is amongst others one of the reasons why I became initially fascinated with him. However, what first seemed unconventional and enigmatic to me can really get a bit boring and annoying if overused.

Anyway, I highly recommend this one considering the price, the printing quality and the fact that you get bigger pictures than in the "Anthology".

Decent book, but don't let the cover fool you. 2 Jun 2011

If you know Hedi Slimane's work, you will know that he primarily shoots in black & white, and this book is no exception. The book shows photographs from a variety of his projects, dating from 2004 to 2010. It contains photographs of musicians, models, and various locations & objects.

One thing that anybody should know before purchasing this book is that the cover is not a good display of the contents of the book. Although the cover shot of Kate Moss is excellent, there are no other similar photographs in the book, and very few pictures of female models in general.

If you have seen other books in the Stern Fotographie series, this one will come as no surprise to you. It is similar in size, shape, print quality, and binding.

This book gives a solid overview of Hedi's work, but many people may prefer to go with a more focused monograph, such as London or Berlin.

Much to be desired 3 Feb 2012

I'm a huge fan of Hedi, and this book is a good OVERVIEW of his work...
but that's it.. just an overview...
You will get more satisfaction by doing a Google search rather than purchasing this.

The Cover photo is misleading, as most of the work is of a documentary nature...
And it is short... only around 50 pages

The images are well printed, but the book feels like it was made at Shutterfly...
Not collectible, mass produced tripe.

Save your money... and do NOT get this book
