Book 1 of the Mageri Series

Zoë Merrick lived a less than ordinary life, until late one night, she was brutally attacked and left for dead.

A man named Adam spotted her running down the road covered in blood, and took her under his wing. Zoë didn't just survive that night - she underwent a physical transformation and acquired strange new abilities. Severed from her old life, her frustration grows as she tries to comprehend what's happening to her.

Serendipity leads her to Justus. He's handsome, arrogant, and not entirely human. Zoë learns the truth about what she is, and just how dangerous their world is for a young Mage. The only way she will understand her power is by putting her trust in this man, and accepting the protection he offers.

When her immortal freedom is threatened by the one man who has a right to claim her, Zoë learns the price of freedom...and the value of loyalty.

I very much enjoyed this book. I read quite a bit of paranormal romance and urban fantasy - enough to know that there's a lot of dross out there but this book doesn't fall into that category. I found the lead female character Zoe to be flawed enough to be able to empathize with her and feisty without being all conquering. The 3 (that's right 3!) guys in her orbit are all drool worthy in their own ways and kept me switching allegiance for chapter to chapter - I still don't know who I'm rooting for in the next book. Also there are enough mysteries to keep you hooked until the next book (what is HALO..? Who is 'The Benefactor'..? What does it mean to be a Unique..?).

As I say in the title there are a few flaws. The spelling mistakes are irritating but occasionally entertaining (I had to chuckle at the part where Zoe was worried that someone wouldn't like her throwing up in his kitten...).

Overall a promising start to the series and I'll definitely be ordering the next book.

I'm always eager to read new indie authors but often feel there is something missing or a not quite right with the novel, but Sterling is an outstanding exception - I cannot recommend this enough. The world building is excellent - it's introduced well and isn't over or under explained. The characters are engaging and Zoe (aka Silver) is a likeable and believable lead with big potential to kick ass... and that's one of the best things about this books - you just know that characters will develop and grow and there is so much potential for the rest of the series. If you love UF and/or PNR you've got to read this!

I loved it 19 Nov 2011

Zoë Merrick is an ordinary human woman that is until she comes back from the dead after being brutally murdered after a night out with her best friend Sunny. She wakes up in a body bag in an ambulance and makes a run for it back to her apartment, however along the way she runs into a stranger called Adam and collapses. Adam takes Zoë back to his house and whilst she sleeps for three days her body transforms into someone and something else. However it's not until Justus walks into life some months later that Zoë finally learns what she is.

This is the debut UF novel by Dannika Dark and I thought that it was wonderful and brilliant and I loved it. This is the first book in the Mageri series where Ms Dark has a new take on things, there is a lot of character and world building going that is setting us up for book 2. I really liked all of the characters in fact there was nothing that annoyed me about them or anything that I would like to change. The plot and pacing were good and I found the book and Ms Dark's writing engrossing. Whilst there is some romantic interest from all three men in the story nothing really happens apart from two scenes where Zoë gets a bit friendlier with two of them and I look forward to see how things will play out on this front.

I would have given this book 5 stars however I don't think that I can do that because there are some spelling errors etc. and I feel that the book needs just that little bit of extra polishing off. I also found that the story jumped around a bit too much and I would find myself thinking `have I just missed something'. Now in Ms Dark's defence this book is written, edited, published and marketed by her, she even does the cover art (which I think is beautiful) herself. I cannot imagine how much hard work this must be especially for your first book so that is why I have knocked only half a star off. Things should improve for the second book though as we are informed on Ms Dark's web site that she is using Beta readers for the next instalment. I would definitely recommend this book. At the time of writing this Sterling is only £1.14 at Amazon even though it is a full length book as opposed to a novella, I would have paid lots more for it. I cannot wait for book 2 which I will most definitely be buying.
