4.0 out of 5 stars A good fisherman's story ... 18 Feb 2012
By Derek
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a well written and illustrated book, of equal interest to the complete novice and for the more experienced fisherman.

Not only does Mik cover the subject very well, but makes it entertaining at times - and demonstrates his innovative approach to all things. The read will teach you a completely new language - and you will learn about 'taking the boile', Carpe Farcie', 'building a jetty', importance of 'Jerusalem Artichokes', bottle spod and spodding, and Frolic biscuits ...!

I have known Mik for over 40 years, so was not surprised at his determination to make a lovely home in south-west France for his retirement with his wife - but also to conquer carp fishing in 'his lake'. For some ten years we were colleagues in a private Land Surveying practice, and his ability to spot problems and offer solutions were always in evidence. His method of taking aerial photographs is very clever idea.

I have happily remained in contact with him so that I can know of his latest enterprise - and his next book that hopefully is not far away !

Retirement has a different meaning for Mik....

5.0 out of 5 stars A Steptoe Guide to Retirement? 15 Mar 2012
By Alan C
Format:Kindle Edition
A Steptoe Guide to Retirement would be an equally valid title for this book, which is as much a philosophy on keeping active and inventive as it is about fishing. I must admit to being an ex colleague of Mik and am delighted to see that he is applying his talents to things much more useful and interesting than the mundane world of work.

From an angling point of view some of the purists out there will probably roll their eyes and suck their teeth, but Mik's methodical approach to analysing each aspect and overcoming each obstacle is a wake up call to anyone like myself who is also a recently returned fisherman, stuck in a bit of a groove and happy to carry on doing things just so because "that's how I've always done it".

However this short book is much more than just a book about fishing. It is proof that you don't have to just go with the flow, and you get the impression that Mik could have chosen just about any other subject at random and come up with any number of valid interesting alternative ideas.

Thoroughly recommended!

I read this short book after a week of stress at work, and I just couldn't stop either laughing, or marveling at what this guy comes up with. This is a must read for anybody who wants to rediscover what fishing is truly about, sheer fun, excitement and discovery. Oh, and if you plan to retire anytime soon, whether you're a fisherman or not, I think you'll find quite a few pearls of wisdom in there.

Mik Bennett has a very unique style, both very insightful and very amusing. In the small world of carp fishing, it is just so refreshing to see somebody who can think on his own, unencumbered by the 'common wisdom' promoted by decades of commercial carp literature. More importantly than just reaching a goal of catching a big carp, he has a lot of fun experimenting, while coming up with all sorts of fascinating contraptions in the process. As they say, it's the journey that counts, not the destination. And Mik shares his journey with us with great truculence, and takes us for a truly fun and enjoyable ride. I just can't wait to read the next installment!

PS. As I was writing this review, this suddenly reminded me of something I read years ago and will never forget... 'Casting at the sun' by Chris Yates. If you loved this classic of carp fishing, then you will truly appreciate Mik's book.
