5.0 out of 5 stars Au so good 10 Dec 2009
Format:Audio CD
A few notes on Stepping Out of Line: the first CD includes among other tracks the Au Pairs first album (Playing with a Different Sex) and their first single (You/Kerb Crawler/Domestic Departure) which perfectly captures their jagged ferocity. Playing with a Different Sex contains the same ferocity, but Pete Hammond and Jane Munro slow things down with some great slinky rhythms, while Paul Foad and Lesley Woods' guitar chops somehow interplay in a strange place somewhere between punk, reggae and Niles Rodgers. The album also highlights Lesley and Paul's sarcastic, sexually provocative, call and response vocals and Lesley's superb voice. There was never a better singer than Lesley Woods, and from the early gig at Birmingham's Golden Eagle to the headlining nights at Hammersmith Palais there was never a better live band than the Au Pairs either.
As others have said the Au Pairs second album Sense and Sensuality included on the second CD has been weirdly and unaccountably slowed in the mix as well as having its track listing changed. Compared to the old vinyl copy I played alongside it it's, quite frankly, a disgrace, but sums up the end of the band riven as it was by musical and political differences (another story!) and probably questions about how `big' they wanted to become. At the time every gig was a sell out and there were huge expectations placed on Sense and Sensuality, especially after Playing with a Different Sex had got to number one in the indie charts. According to the band, the final mix was messed around with to increase its commerciality - which begs the question about why the masters for this troubled album weren't totally remixed and revamped. There's a lesson and warning here for anyone attempting to rescue `old' recordings.
This release, however, still deserves five stars, as this is the perfect introduction to this totally underrated and still great band.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing band but hunt out the original albums 23 July 2009
Format:Audio CD
This is a great collection unfortunately the remastering of many of the tracks from 'Sense and Sensuality' on the second CD have been slowed down and sound sluggish. This is particularly noticeable on such greats as 'America' and 'Stepping Out of Line' which plod along lacking the original energy. My advice would be to seek out the original releases or the 'Shocks to the System' compilation to hear these tracks as they should be heard.

There are some saving graces though, 'Runs With Honey' and 'Hakka He Ha' are demos (for an unrecorded third album??) and are two of my favourites which I had never heard on any other compilation.

Definitely one of my favourite bands and they sound as fresh and as relevant today as they ever were.

4.0 out of 5 stars New fan 25 Jun 2012
By David M
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I ordered this album after hearing tracks from it featured on a UK Radio 6 programme.

Some other reviewers have commented on the mix of the tracks from "Sense and Sensuality" on CD2. It appears with the original LP release of this album in 1982 there were errors on the recording, including it being recorded at too fast a speed.

This may explain the comments from "Montgomery Snapper" that compared to his vinyl issue some of the tracks on CD2 of this reissue sound too slow. This CD therefore may feature the tracks at the correct speed, but I am no Au Pairs expert so I may be incorrect as well. Saying that it still seems a shame that they have changed the track listing of the original "Sense and Sensuality" album on CD2.

But despite all that the music featured on this compilation is still great and well worth a place in any music lover's collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars mixed feelings 15 Oct 2006
Format:Audio CD
I really looked forward to this;all the tracks,a great price,no bonus tracks buried away on other compilations:Monogamy for instance, all available on one double cd.
However, the songs are great from a real "indie" band, before any flanged, chorussed or other interesting guitar sound was classified as such (as today's music is so often labelled and burdened) in the post apocalyptic void left by punk, and a history lesson on life in the 80's,but I digress.
My mixed feelings, and why I'd recommend the 2 studio albums to be kept are apart from lyrics being unavailable, the anthology at times seems to be playing too slowly. My ears?
Afficianodoes of the band, tell me does America(from sense and sensualiity) sound too slow ,with Lesley woods sounding like she's got laryngitis?also some of the production values seem lacking to me:a criticism of mix not the superb material!5 stars for the content,3 for the cd itself, hence my 4 overall.
This slow affliction covers much of the 2nd album's tracks to my ears as well as headache for Michelle from the great, and I mean great debut album, though if it isn't that track,I am doing this from memory.
That said Monogamy et al, which were absent from the 2 90's reissues along with ideal woman and all the BBC stuff, are reason to buy this, and,if the odd slowed remix(and remember that's just my take) are ignored, this is essential stuff, but if you have those rpm issues:keep them!
If not buy this be blown away then get the rpm cds and keep all the lot.trust me I did and I don't regret it
