I really looked forward to this;all the tracks,a great price,no bonus tracks buried away on other compilations:Monogamy for instance, all available on one double cd.
However, the songs are great from a real "indie" band, before any flanged, chorussed or other interesting guitar sound was classified as such (as today's music is so often labelled and burdened) in the post apocalyptic void left by punk, and a history lesson on life in the 80's,but I digress.
My mixed feelings, and why I'd recommend the 2 studio albums to be kept are apart from lyrics being unavailable, the anthology at times seems to be playing too slowly. My ears?
Afficianodoes of the band, tell me does America(from sense and sensualiity) sound too slow ,with Lesley woods sounding like she's got laryngitis?also some of the production values seem lacking to me:a criticism of mix not the superb material!5 stars for the content,3 for the cd itself, hence my 4 overall.
This slow affliction covers much of the 2nd album's tracks to my ears as well as headache for Michelle from the great, and I mean great debut album, though if it isn't that track,I am doing this from memory.
That said Monogamy et al, which were absent from the 2 90's reissues along with ideal woman and all the BBC stuff, are reason to buy this, and,if the odd slowed remix(and remember that's just my take) are ignored, this is essential stuff, but if you have those rpm issues:keep them!
If not buy this be blown away then get the rpm cds and keep all the lot.trust me I did and I don't regret it
