This is a seminal album, a big transfusion of North American swing to help liven up Scottish music. Moore's ideas about Cape Breton somehow representing 'real' Highland music - explained earnestly and at great length in the booklet - are almost certainly a fantasy. It seems unlikely in itself that it would have stood still while Scottish music has changed so much and indeed, when you hear it, it clearly hasn't.

It's interesting to speculate, but what really matters is that this is one of those albums that just lifts you, right from the start and (as they say) throughout. I admit I was sceptical, years ago, about pipes and piano; but Moore, with pianist Hilda Chaisson (not an obviously Scottish name!) made it work and opened up a whole new world of possibilities. He also went a long way towards putting danceability back into pipes music.

Such a shame that illness put a premature end to his career as one of the most innovative pipers around.

I bought this originally when it came out back in the '90s. There are still very few bagpipe albums as good. Fantastic range of music played with great verve and outstandingly good for dancing.

A Revolutionary Traditionalist 28 Mar 2004
By Jan C. Brodeur - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
In this album you will hear the culmination of Hamish's devotion and rediscovery of the pipes as a true folk instrument. His research into the past to discover what pipe music was like before it was forced into the ridgid confines of military pipe bands and competitive standards, has stirred controversey in the piping world and it reveals another side to the music that many people may be unfamiliar with.
If you close your eyes and give your imagination rein, these tunes will bring you over misty hills and into old wooden dance halls. There is a spirit here that will not be lost.

Here's to Mrs. Hamilton 8 July 2003
By "raoul23" - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I saw Mr. Hamish Moore play his small pipe at the Folklife Festival on the National Mall in Washington, DC. He played the song "Mrs. Hamilton of Pitchcaid" -- a strange and beautiful, mournful, loopy song that by itself makes this a 5 star CD. ...
