Follies 18 July 2007
I can only concur with the revue by the gentleman from Brighton, I wish I had read his opinion before buying, this is NOT a concert performance, it is nearly an hour of badly edited documentary which is at times boring in the extreme, then about 40 minutes of badly cut highlights of what looked like a good show. It doesn't even explain who the characters are nor even introduce about half of the performers.

This is the most disappointing DVD I have EVER bought.

Firstly this isn't really 'Follies in Concert'. It's a tv documentary of the lead-up to the concert in 1985 followed by edited highlights ofit. Quite interesting but not the DVD I was expecting.

Secondly all you get is the programme, no extras and not even a chapter selection so (on my DVD atleast) you have to watch the whole thing or fast forward to get to the good bits. This was a major dissapointment.

The documentray is reasonably interesting but is essentially stars in rehersal saying how wonderful Sondeim is and how wonderful the rest of the cast is. A bit tedious after 30 minutes. Do watch out though for the bit with Barbra Cook in rehersal with the rest of the cast in rapt wonder except for Elaine Stritch, who couldn't look less interested.

The concert itself is pretty good but as it's the highlights you do find yourself waiting for the good songs rather than appreciating the show/event as a whole.

Overall I'd say it's interesting to watch but a missed opportunity.

As a straight copy of VHS to DVD the picture and sound quality is poor. As previous reviewers have said, most of the DVD is taken up with rehearsal footage and short interviews with the performers. This "documentary" type footage has not aged at all well and at times is unintentionally hilarious. You have Elaine Stritch talking about putting on a show as if she is responsible for organizing the invasion of Iraq, while other clips are reminiscent of a Victoria Wood sketch. The edited performances shown from the concert are of course excellently performed. It was also a delight to see the wonderful songwriting team of Comden and Green perform. The CD version of the whole show is a five star recording.....this "making of" type TV show is only for die-hard fans.
