Amazon.co.uk Review

After a government-spawned "superflu" wipes out more than 90 per cent of the earth's population, the devastated survivors must decide whether to support or resist the advances of a mysterious stranger from way down South (heh-heh) who wishes to claim this new world order for himself. Although the six-hour length of The Stand makes it nigh-impossible to digest in one sitting, this well-paced adaptation of Stephen King's apocalyptic magnum opus ranks among the best adaptations of the author's work, with strong performances from Gary Sinise, Miguel Ferrer, and especially Jamey Sheridan as a good-old-boy version of Old Scratch. The opening scene, set to the strains of Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper," is one of the most chilling things ever shot for television. Director Mick Garris is no stranger to King's world, having also helmed Sleepwalkers, the recent television remake of The Shining, and the upcoming Desperation. --Andrew Wright

Synopsis

3.0 out of 5 stars Stephen King's The Stand, 25 July 2004
By A Customer
Great DVD. Only a pity that one or more scenes are missing at the end of the 1st DVD. So when starting with the 2nd DVD, you just miss a part of the story line...

3.0 out of 5 stars Where's the rest of it??????, 23 Jan 2011
This review is from: Stephen King's - The Stand [DVD] (DVD)
It gets off to such a great start, but clearly in the transfer to DVD, a substantial amount of footage was cut between episodes 2 and 3, leaving the audience to fill in the blanks as to whom exactly some of the new characters are, where they came from and how on earth did the series take such a leap forward with so much unexplained.
If I'd known there were going to be such big holes in the story, I'd have bought something else.
Very disappointing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of The Stand, 19 July 2011
This review is from: Stephen King's - The Stand [DVD] (DVD)
Many of Stephen King's stories made unsuccessful leaps from the pages to the big screen. This is an exception. The plot is fantastic and some of the actors really hit the mark. I think the story is a success because it isn't too far from reality. Man trying to interfere with nature or play God, only for it to backfire spectacularly. The opening sequence to this film is immense and the song that supports it, awesome. BOC - 'Don't fear the reaper' fits perfectly with this film and gives the opening of the movie a real edge. As well as this, there are other great tracks such as 'Don't dream it's over' by Crowded House. As well as the pieces written by W.G. Snuffy Walden. As a story it works, it is certainly up there with 'The Langoliers' and other King classics. Every character has their own dimension and inner plot, which gives the film terrific depth. Randall Flagg plays the role of the devil fantastically well, even now as an adult, he sends chills down my spine. To anyone who enjoys horror movies and is a fan of King, then I would definitely recommend this film.
