Pleasantly surprised. 31 Oct 2007
I was a real fan of the original movie and then the book. The wrong way round, I know, but I was only ten and then along came this. Now I really hoped for something brilliant but didn't quite get that. I expected absolute trash but didn't get that either. What I thought we got was a fairly faithful take on the book and a stand up good try at re-making what I think is the best horror flick of all time. I quite like modern re-makes because they give you something new even if it is just a change of cast - I watch stage plays with different casts all the time. Some are better than others but we don't suggest there should only ever be one version. So I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy Rob Lowe and his mates running around The Lot and giving me the chance to hide behind the furniture all over again. Go on, give it a chance.

I don't enjoy writing negative reviews but this is an exception. In short, if you want to see this film, go for the original starring David Soul. I know the plot of this film, having watched it many times over the years but this remake was condensed to fit in to "normal" film time; I found it confusing and lacking atmosphere. The end scenes in the original are spine chilling - this is as scary as kids on the doorstep on Halloween. Can DVD's go in the recycling bin? I shall check...

Vaguely recalling the excellent David Soul version, this looked like a promising update of a great story with an excellent cast but turned out very disappointing. It really is just a campy revisiting of the usual vampire horror/haunted/spooky house clichés and despite modern references (internet/Afghanistan/child abuse), the director makes no effort to take the story in new directions and modernise the genre at all. The vampires are about as scary as your grandmother, the effects/make-up are feeble. The end descends into farce with a an overweight, middle-aged vampire-in-chief played by Rutger Hauer (did they limit his appearances because of his weight á la Brando?) crawling Exorcist-spider like across the ceiling was an unintentionally amusing highlight. The ending is as predictable and lazy as the rest of the production, suffice to say it has something to do with Hauer in coffin having a stake plunged through his heart in his vampire layer. Here was an opportunity to do what they did in 30 Days Of Night - Special Edition 2 DVD set with 48-page Graphic Novel & Slipcase [2007] or Near Dark (2 Disc Special Edition) [DVD] [1987] modernise this classic tale and add new dimensions and maybe revamp (pun intended) the genre that's been ruined by Buffy and other mediocre, unscary renditions. Either the director was too lazy or unimaginative to explore some of these ideas, or didn't have the money after signing Sutherland, Hauer and Rob Lowe, but it's a shame and a chance wasted! Stick with David Soul version.

A failed remake of 1979 version, with the original story greatly...
This adaptation of excellent Stephen King's book is mostly a failure and it is definitely inferior to the 1979 version. Read more

An improvement but still not there yet
I bought this DVD after reading the book and watching the original movie with high hopes that it'd resemble the book a lot better than the original, and it does. Read more

A good effort
As far as remakes go, i found this to be a very good effort. I won't go into the plot as i'm sure if you're thinking of getting this, then you've probably seen the original. Read more

Salems Lot - Superb
This is the newer version of the original film starring David Soul and I would say it still retains the thrilling suspense of the original and is one of the best remakes around. Read more

A decent remake of a 70's classic
Based on Stephen King's classic vampire novel, 'Salems Lot' is an impressive 'TV mini-series' remake of the 1979 Tobe Hooper original. Read more
