Despite the advances that have been made in the field of clinical hypnosis over recent years many people are still unaware of the vast array of therapeutic skills that lie behind the process of indirect hypnotic induction. This video makes specific the inovative, and often complex techniques of renowned hypnotherapist Stephen Brooks. Disc one contains an unedited re-mastered recording of a unique therapy session recorded at the University of East Sussex for the British National Sound Archives in 1990. Disc two contains a much longer version of the same hypnosis session where Brooks intersperses the video with commentary about what he is doing. The commentary throws light on many of the complex hypnotic language patterns used and expands on the techniques and principles of Brooksonian Hypnotherapy. To avoid repition, Brooks has deliberately avoided commenting on what has already been written in most books about hypnosis, preferring to comment on the more subtle dynamics of the session and what at first seems to be a magical form of therapy but when explained, is seen as the result of many years of perfecting the art of indirect hypnosis. Not only does Brooks demonstrate the induction of indirect hypnosis he also evokes many of the classical hypnotic phenomena in an indirect and informal manner. Phenomena include arm elevation, arm catalepsy, anaesthesia, age regression, dissociation, hallucination, eye catalepsy and post hypnotic suggestion. The indirect hypnotic suggestion is so informal in nature that the viewer may, at first, not realise everything that is happening. However subsequent re-viewing of the video and its commentary will reveal many new ideas and indirect hypnotic interventions. This is the re-mastered 20th Anniversary edition of the video originally recorded by the University of East Sussex for the British Library Sound Archives. For further information please visit:

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 22 July 2009
For all who have studied the techniques and therapeutic strategies of Stephen Brooks and British Hypnosis Research, including myself, among the many points discussed one shines most predominantly; the genius of the Indirect style.

Brooks has researched, practiced, and innovated the Ericksonian methodology of Ericksonian therapy, making it his life's mission to educate others in the use of these brilliant learnings.

This DVD, where Brooks engages in a seemingly conversational therapy session with a patient, is no exception. Brooks executes key techniques with astounding competence, appearing effortless and colloquial while simultaneously enabling therapeutic change to occur.

For anyone interested in learning anything about therapy, this DVD is a must, and, if like myself, you simply appreciate genius in any form it may present itself, then this DVD is also well worth a look.

Brooks breaks down every therapeutic tool and every phrase, no matter how seemingly innocent, revealing the true nature of their brilliance, educating the viewer as to how this technique is utilised, why it is being utilised and truly breaking away from the typical stereotypically foolish and melodramatic "Stage" style of hypnotism.

A work of art, a masterful achievemnt in therapeutic education, an astounding interpretation of Ericksonian methodology and belief.

In short: excellent, a must see for those in any walk of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars finally... 22 July 2009
Finally a great quality video about hypnosis which goes so deeply in detail that it almost penetrates every core and aspect of those who afford themselves the chance to watch this. Now, something valuable that is available for all who want to know how to apply hypnosis and get to learn therapy and its application in every day life. I have had the extraordinary chance to meet and get to know Stephen Brooks in person and when one decides to attend his workshops at first might have a variety of expectations and still only after you get to know him in person you realize for yourself that he is a man who has so nicely integrated mind and heart in such a way which radiates healing and one can enjoy the benefits almost immediately and carry a piece of joy within his own life.
Enjoy this video.

5.0 out of 5 stars hypnosis video 1 Aug 2009
I have purchased tons of video training courses over the years from some of the best training schools around this is one of the best and is very different from most training videos.

By demonstrating on a real client you can see how Ericksonian hypnosis is used to create of different hypnotic phenomena that can be utilised to help the client.

The DVD also comes with a transcript so that you can begin to stop some of the indirect techniques that are easily missed when watching.

This is the type of DVD you will have to watch many times to pick up on all the techniques used because there are so many and they are done indirectly.

I would go as far as saying that this is better than most of the videos of Erickson doing therapy. The best video I have seen of Erickson doing therapy is his DVD called 'so you wanted a trance demonstration now' but this DVD is up to date and the video and sound quality is good and in colour and it also demonstrates doing therapy rather than just a demonstration.

You will also get a step by step review of each technique on the second video as Stephen goes back through the video stopping at key points to tell you what he is doing.

The on line course will also be a great resource to discuss with other students what you learnt by watching the DVD and also to see the video from a different point of view which is one of the best ways of learning.

The online course has 10 units that cover the skills demonstrated on the DVD.

I once went to an indirect hypnotherapy training seminar given by a master therapist and after the seminar many of the trainees said that they were more convinced than ever that the therapist was a master of the art of indirect therapy. Unfortunately, many of us still didn't feel that we knew how to do indirect hypnotherapy. By its very nature, the process of indirect hypnotherapy is very intuitive and thus very difficult to articulate and communicate. All the more wonder that Stephen Brooks has been able to clearly explain and vividly demonstrate a wide array of techniques in this DVD.

Stephen's method is brilliant. First you see the session as it unfolded and then you watch it with each step in the therapeutic process lucidly explained. Stephen is an incredibly sensitive and insightful therapist and his commentary illuminates subtleties that all but highly trained hypnotherapists (and maybe even some of them) would miss.

I unreservedly recommend this DVD.
