When life throws you curveballs, lemons, or closed doors, there's just one solution: Dance! Step Up 2 The Streets is a worthy entry into the inspirational dance-it-out film lexicon, with moves, choreography, and music that sometimes seem to defy even gravity. The spunky young heroine is Andie, played with sass and amazing dance talent by Briana Evigan (daughter of hardworking TV actor Greg Evigan). Andie is from one of Baltimore's grittiest neighborhoods, but her dance ability--forged in fire on the streets of Baltimore--lands her in a prestigious performing arts school, where she struggles to fit in even as her schoolmates are awed by her talent. With a nod to Love Story, our working-class heroine catches the eye of a privileged boy, Chase (Robert Hoffman), who's captivated by Andie's dance chops and genuine heart. Andie's fierce sense of self helps ground the film. At one point she lectures Chase, "Look, the streets is about where you're from. It's not some school talent show. There's no spring floors. There's no spotlights!" But the true star of the film is its amazing dance sequences and the talented cast works the moves for all they're worth. The supercharged soundtrack features Plies (with Akon) and a couple of excellent Missy Elliott tracks. Ready? Hit it! --A.T. Hurley

Synopsis

Jon M. Chu directs this feel-good sequel about pursuing what you love and finding yourself along the way. Andie (Briana Evigan, daughter of actor Greg Evigan) is a tough Baltimore teen who grew up dancing and is now part of the 410, the hottest dance crew in the city and reigning champions of the Streets, an underground dance competition. Unable to control Andie's rebellious ways, her guardian, Sarah (Sonja Sohn), has decided to send her to Texas to live with her aunt. But Andie has one last chance to stay with her crew in her beloved Baltimore: the Maryland School of the Arts (MSA). Unfortunately, maintaining her studies at MSA means less time with the 410. To make matters worse, Andie is having a hard time fitting in at her new high school, where tradition is revered and being outside the box is frowned upon. Luckily, she has a partner in crime in classmate Chase Collins (Robert Hoffman), whose stuffy brother, Blake (Will Kemp), is the school's director and a constant thorn in his younger brother's side. When the 410 boots Andie out, she and Chase find their own crew of overlooked MSA dancers and take it all the way to the Streets. The real star of Step Up 2 the Streets is the amazing dancing and there's plenty of it. From the opening scene in a Baltimore subway to the playground to studio rehearsals to the Streets, these kids give it everything they've got. Channing Tatum briefly reprises his role as Tyler Gage, who knows Andie from the neighbourhood.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Step up 2" is less than "Step up" 18 July 2008
Format:DVD
Andie is on a downward slope after her mother's death, she's skipping school, staying out late, and part of a crew - the 410 - whose subway prank ends up on the evening news. The result is an ultimatum from her guardian: move to her aunt's place in Texas or join MSA. - And so the very street Andie finds her way to the polished floors of MSA. What follows is: Andie is kicked out of the 410 and starts her own crew with Chase, MSA royalty.

"Step up 2" is all about being yourself and not being afraid to dance your own dance, which is a great message. The dancing is awesome, but there really isn't that much focus on it. The best dance sequence is a barbecue party with salsa. The dance finale at the end is more about the rain pouring down than the dancing. Also, it is evident that Chase is the better dancer compared to Andie.

I have to admit that "Step up 2" doesn't meet the high standards set in "Step up". It's less in every way. Still, "Step up 2" is a nice dance movie - the soundtrack is edgy and great.

My advice: don't expect too much.

Louise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Good 23 July 2008
By Rachel
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Obviously designed for the younger generation, Step Up 2: The Streets is a well choreographed and fast paced movie that has less of the drama of the first, but a lot more of the message, 'It's not what you have, it's what you make of what you have'.

The storyline was lacking a lot after the first, but I found the dancing and the rawness of this film a lot better than the first.
It seems a lot less polished than the first also (Perhaps due to style of dance or new directing), but nethertheless it's a good film.
The dance scene at the end was truly something and much better than anything in Step Up, although the rain involved played a big part im this.

Overall, Storyline, a lot more basic than first but dance scenes a lot better than first (In my Opinion). The biggest compliment i can give is that straight after watching this film, me and one of my girlfriends got up and started to dance, checking out all the hip-hop and dance videos on youtube. Check it out and it just may inspire you!

(There are other dance groups pieces for the street battle as extras on the disc aswell.)
