Seriously - this is good. Penguins (on I love everybody) have given way to Bears and a whole lot besides - Lyle is so on the money with this (double) album, I can play the two disks in rotation and not tire of it. Musicianship is, as always excellent - the bluegrass guitar is something not often heard - as usual, Lyle pulls together something new and something old and creates a wholesome whole. - as the critics said 'the storytelling is imaginative' - exactly so - the tales of the Stove at the Salvation station not taking - complete images spring into the mind, at the same time as unconsious urge to sing along with what feels compellingly involving.
Seesh - sounds rather fulsome, but both disks are so packed with great stuff, there's no reason for ANY music-lover not to love it. Let a little Lyle into your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyle Proves That He Can Do Covers... 7 Dec 2010
By Og Oggilby VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Lyle Lovett is a very rare and special talent. His albums of original material show a writer that can be a droll and charming lyricist, as well as being a memorable tunesmith. This album, a double CD of interpretations of fellow Texan songwriters, is a superb collection that showcases the talents of many of Lovett's Lone Star State contemporaries, yet also beautifully illustrates the man's great vocal interpretive powers. It stands up as a powerful addition to Lovett's recorded career - a gem that gains power and lustre with successive plays. The man is a minor deity!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'll sing for you a song 18 Jun 2011
By Dangerous Dave TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I got into Lyle Lovett and picked up various albums quite a few years back. I struggled with some of his stuff initially, I learned to love most of it but there were still some items I'd never quite relate to. His intelligence was never in question. Just that sometimes it was too big and he just had to prove something . You felt sometimes "I just wish he'd relax a bit". Well he did on this one.

I recall it was a bit expensive being a double album so I held back for some time. Anyway it finally joined my collection. And I've never bought another Lyle Lovett since. I don't need any more - hell, I may do someday. But this one does it for me. It did it then and it does now.

I'm very glad that most of the content is pretty obscure with a couple of exceptions. I'll forgive him for that pair - Townes' "Flyin' Shoes" and "If I needed you" - since they're both such great songs.

The album works lyrically, it works melodically, it works in performance terms with an excellent small band of very seasoned Nashville and LA session pros with sufficient variation in instrumentation between numbers to keep the interest level up, it works in terms of the flow between numbers, most importantly it works because Lyle`s respect for the songs comes across loud and clear. He even manages to indulge his more jazzy proclivities occasionally.
