Book Description

Life jumps the rails, runs away from you and there’s no catching it up. Not ever.

Winner of the Derringer Award for best short crime story.

"I mean it," the gunman shrieked, and he pointed the revolver at Ward, the end of the barrel moving in tiny circles with the shaking of his hands. "I mean it. One step closer..."

Ward stopped where he was. Other than the man with the gun, no-one else was standing. The sun was shining bright through the frosted windows, and somewhere in the bank a lazy dying fly buzzed and battered against the glass. The bank smelt of floor polish. Ward could taste the pickle from the sandwich he had eaten an hour earlier. Everything was very real, as sharp and defined as the stars on a cold and cloudless November night.

I've not been a bad man, Ward thought, although I could have been a better one. But I've not been a bad man. There's always that. He thought about how blue and perfect the sky had been that morning. He thought of Sarah, of how they were before it had all gone wrong, and he wondered what she was doing now. He hoped that she was happy. I don't think I have ever felt more alive, he thought. And now I know I've wasted so many things. So much time.

More About the Author

Hello, thanks for visiting.

I've written both novels and short stories, mostly crime fiction.

ONE OF US is my debut crime novel. It started as a short story published in Hitchcock's Magazine, became a novel, and ended up being shortlisted for the UK Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger award for best unpublished novel.

I've also had over thirty short stories published. Some of those stories have been reprinted in Year's Best anthologies, won a Derringer Award, been voted into readers' top ten of the year, or been in anthologies nominated for awards..

NOWHERE TO GO is a collection of eleven of my previously published crime stories, many of which appeared first in print in magazines like Hitchcock's and Ellery Queen's.

ICE AGE is a collection of eight stories of the strange and the chilling that have been published in various places over the last few years.

And last, but not least, SEA CHANGE is something different again: a young adult novel like those I loved as a child by writers like Alan Garner and Susan Cooper, about haunted, folklore-ridden England.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Quick Read 23 Sept. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is only a short story and thus a quite quick read, however don't lets its smallness detract from its quality. This is about a bank robbery, and we come into it when the robbery is already in progress. This isn't a nice clean robbery, and things start to go wrong for the robber. Through Ward, one of the customers, we follow what happens next.

What I particularly like is that we don't know the final outcome of the robbery, or indeed we can't be certain what happens to Ward, we can only conjecture, thus making this a story that will stick in your mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars One step closer 2 Oct. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a brilliant short story which will only take you around 10 minutes to read - but don't let that put you off, the quality of Iain Rowan's writing is excellent and this book is pretty much guaranteed to grip you from the very first sentence.

Ward, a down-on-his-luck guy finds himself in the middle of an armed bank robbery after popping into his local branch during his lunch hour. The stress of the situation makes Ward reflect on his life, the wasted opportunities and mistakes he has made.

The book is fast paced (it needs to be as a short story) and the sequence of events build up as things in the bank quickly go from bad to worst as the jittery bank robber simply reacts to events without premeditated thought.

Ward decides to take action - but will that be his undoing? That question remains unanswered which means the book finishes on a cliffhanger - something that really works well for this story.

The repetition of the first few paragraphs of the book right at the end was a powerful technique in this story - although they were the same words they held a completely different meaning once you knew what Ward was about to do.

I thoroughly recommend this well crafted book and I will definitely be looking out for more books by Iain Rowan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it.. that's an order 2 Jan. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the 2nd short story of Iain Rowan's i have read .... the first being 'sighted' which is excellent by the way. This one is about a bloke during an ordinary mundane day getting caught in a bank raid. The raid doesn't go well , we hear the main characters thoughts as it progresses... all the things we would probably think.
The book is sharp and well written... i am ordering you to read it... IT'S FREE .............. having now discovered this author i am downloading everything he has written and am gonna start to stalk him....I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb short story 16 Oct. 2011
By Mole
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ward is waiting to be served, when a gunman bursts in and holds up the bank. What follows is a real thriller and the end is left open for the reader to finish for themselves.

This is a very short story; just a few pages long. However, there is more crammed into this than many much larger novels. The writing is clear, concise and delivers a real punch; if this is typical of Iain Rowan's writing, then he is definitely one to follow.

Well worth downloading to the Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent short story 18 Oct. 2011
By Nemo
Format:Kindle Edition
Storytelling at its best.

A bank robbery turns bad and becomes a hostage situation. Ward gets caught up in this nightmare situation and has a decision to make.

The story moves at a blistering pace and you really feel that you're there, in the bank, with the hostages.

This short ten minute read is an excellent filler for a coffee break. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping. Bursting with detail. Intense. 16 Oct. 2012
By Danny
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Absolutely dripping in detail, encompassing the main character's journey brilliantly. Rowan's highly descriptive writing allows you to immerse yourself in the very detail he lays out so well.

As with another of Rowan's short stories, Lilies, the ending is brilliantly paced & phrased perfectly to close.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick but good 13 Nov. 2011

Short, but the end leaves you kind of sucking your breath in. What happens when he takes that one step closer? I liked the part that had the main character rambling on mindlessly in his head, which is how I imagine most people would be in that situation. Def. worth a read.
