As a male, I am not at first glance in the immediate target market for this book but I did have a spell as a single parent in the 90s and all the advice on sorting childcare brought back some memories. It would have been useful to have this book then.

There is a wealth of really practical advice here and I think the approach is really refreshing: work and home need not be a binary juggle - they can fuel and support eachother.

This book is a great example of how important it is in work and life to balance the needs of all the stakeholders involved. What Christine Brown-Quinn reminds the reader of, is that the choices they make at one stage of their life do not have to be forever. Some priorities that take centre stage when your career is on the ascendancy may be different to those that you choose when you have children. With a lot of different people involved from perhaps a childminder, partner, manager at work, children etc. etc. juggling them all takes just as much attention and management as other areasa of life.

Ms Brown-Quinn presents her advice in a no-nonsense, practical fashion, based on her own experiences, and outlines her 3C's approach of commitment, communication and conflict management as the way to manage the situation. So no need to feel inadequate when reading this book, just feel thankful that someone who has been there and done it (Christime was a high powered business woman in a corporate job)has been willing to write about how to manage things so that other parents (both men and women) can learn too.

The Superwoman myth is responsible for pressure put on many mums - do you feel you have to be a great mum AND do a fab job at work too? Although we're moved on from the shoulder padded suit wearing image of the eighties, we're still juggling and trying to stay on top of everything home, family and work related. Step Aside Super Woman: Career & Family is for Any Woman is a helpful book for any new mum who is wondering how to match up work and home.

In the book, Christine Brown-Quinn points out how many of the skills she learnt in her business career are applicable to raising a family. Commitment, Communication and Conflict Management are all key elements to successful work and home life. Christine's advice definitely rings true for me - I've found my business and family skills have developed alongside each other.
