4.0 out of 5 stars Four and a half stars for a bold performance of a great symphony, 29 Jan 2009

This review is from: Stenhammar: Symphony No. 2, Op. 34 / Excelsior! Op. 13 (Audio CD)
It is annoying that the system does not allow the awarding of half-stars!. Actually, if the Stig Westerberg performance of this great work was not soon to be available on Amazon (the system will also not allow me to put in a product link for some reason) then this would be a clear 5 star winner. The main reason for my diffidence about declaring this is the speed of the first movement, which Jarvi rather rushes - though to exciting effect. The rest of the performance is superb and recorded in the finest BIS sound, making this a recording well worth having.

If you are interested in exploring Nordic symphonic music other than Sibelius then this symphony by a contemperaneous Swedish composer (who changed his whole style of writing after having heard Sibelius' 2 Symphony) is a knockout of a discovery, standing up there with the works of Nielsen but like neither Sibelius nor the Danish composer. It is full of strongly composed melodic writing and breathes a wonderful open-air northern feeling. Composed in 1913 and well away from the influence of the Second Viennese School, this is tuneful and on occasons breathes the same air as the music of the country people of Sweden. A memorable and fine work that should be much better known.
