Format: Audio CD
Stenhammar wrote comparatively little solo music for his own instrument, and where the two piano concertos are big public statements, the solo music often tends to the understated and intimate. They sometimes wear their influences on their sleeve (Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, perhaps Grieg too) but do have a real personality of their own, fully formed in the evocatively-named suite of 'Nights of Late Summer' (Sensommarnätter) but more than glimpsed in the earlier pieces here too. The more I listen to this music the more rewarding I find it - especially in these fine performances from Martin Stürfalt.

His advantage over the competition (the ones I've heard being Niklas Sivelöv on Naxos, Lucia Negro on BIS and Cassandra Wyss on Capriccio) partly lies with the engineering - the piano sound Hyperion conjures up has a warmth, presence and sweetness that is just in a different class. But he also has a distinctively sensitive touch, and a command of rubato that prevents Stenhammar's sequences of repeated rhythmic patterns becoming monotonous. I noticed this particularly in his fantastic performance of the Op. 12 Sonata, an intimate Beethoven homage that occasionally struggles to escape its model but has some truly beautiful writing - just check out the opening theme of the first movement. Stürfalt is superbly lyrical here, and builds the finale with a cumulative power that no other performance I've heard begins to match; the closing pages are properly exultant. Occasionally he can seem less mercurial than, say, Sivelöv - but the latter can sound just too aggressive, not helped by the brittle and edgy piano sound on Naxos.

Completists will want Lucia Negro's multi-volume survey on BIS (she includes, for example, two unpublished movements that were originally intended for the 'Nights of Late Summer'). But the essentials are here, as well played and recorded as you will find.
