Excellent recording: fine singing and fine instrumental playing. Fine expressive performances of cantatas in the "gli affetti" style - word and musical painting demonstrating a whole range of human emotions very well done. Affetto even more than emotion, means the general emotional ambience that characterizes the aria. During the Baroque period this conception of the "affetti" arose from the aesthetic of the marvellous, of astonishment and of surprise. The virtuosity of the singer had to be exceptional and completely directed to "gli affetti". The singer had to bring out the power of expression required by the dramatic situation, using the voice to the best advantage of the tessitura and capacity. These performances well demonstrate this Baroque period style with elegance and finesse. Steffani (1654 - 1728) was Kappelmaster at the Court in Hanover and was succeeded by Handel. A great Brilliant Classics issue, with good acoustical recorded sound. Recommended.
