5.0 out of 5 stars Getting into Stefan's mind 5 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I read the original Vampire Diaries books many years ago, I loved them, along with the newer books released. With the recent explosion in Vampire related media, the books were adapted as a TV series. I really liked the series and found the changes to the original novels fresh and very well done. Stefan's Diaries is written by the book series' author but follows the altered TV series story. In the original novels, Stefan was actually born in Renaissance Italy - The 1600's and came to Fells Church (as Mystic Falls was known as in the books) without any prior involvement with the town. The TV series changes Stefan's past to him being alive during the American Civil War in the early 1860's, living in Mystic Falls. Which to me makes much more sense as to why he returns almost 150 years later. L.J Smith has done a great job adapting her original story to fit the TV series' time and location while still retaining the essence of the previous novels.

Stefan's Diaries is set in 1864 and ties in brilliantly with the flashback scenes in the TV series' first season. We get to learn exactly what life was like for him and his brother Damon during this time; and an insight into their relationship and how it fell apart.

I reccommend this book for anyone who is a fan of the TV series and thus familiar with the adapted storyline. It gets in to Stefan's head and expands on the flashbacks from the TV series. If you haven't seen or don't like the TV version, it still works as a stand alone story. Fan's of the original novels I'm sure will like it too, though many things have changed the core plotline is essentially the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars great TV tie-in! 30 Dec 2010
By Lulu
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A great tie-in to the TV series! I first got interested in Vampire Diaries when the TV series was released, and now I'm addicted. I can't comment on the difference in details from the books as I haven't read them yet (although I do have them), but this is a great read to give you more information on Stefan's life before Elena. Sections of the book clearly mirror the flash back scenes from the show, but I found that amazing as I could see it all playing out in my head as if I was watching the TV, and it helped me to visualise the rest. I can't wait for the next book to be released so I can learn more about Stefan's past!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! 24 Nov 2010
By Emily
Format:Paperback
This book is really great! L. J. Smith has changed the plot line to fit with the TV series so all those who enjoy it can understand what happened in 1864 with Stefan, Damon and Katherine. Full of unrequited love, drama and romance, this book will be a great hit to all Twilight and Vampire Diaries fans! 5 Stars! :D

2.0 out of 5 stars Readable but nothing special 22 April 2011
Format:Paperback
Although readable, this book feels like it has been put together to make money from the popular first book series/TV series on the back of the 'vampire fantasy' craze. I have enjoyed both the original and newer stories, as well as the adapted TV series, but found the 'Stefans Diaries' series to have a weak plot and not portray any of the passion and personality of the latter. The characters are not as strong, and the infamous Catherine love triangle we are familiar with has not been portrayed to any where the near the magnitude of signifance it holds 100 odd years later.

All in all, I believe this series of 3 could easily be one book given the length and size of print, further leading me to believe it is a money making ploy. Although readable, they are basic and lack the depth of plot and characters, and are maybe better suited to younger fans.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor writing & no research 17 April 2012
By Venetia
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's a pity that the writers from the TV series who've had a hand in this couldn't bring some of their TV scripting skills to it. The idea is good but it's poorly done. The writing is pedantic and there is a total disregard for historical accuracy of the 1860's - ie. clothes, conventions etc. Altogether, disappointing. I won't be reading the others.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed ;( with this book 2 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am sorry to say that I was really dissapointed with this book. I had really high hopes for it!! It starts off just before Katherine arrives in Fells Church. I was hoping that this book would give me an insite into the way Stefan felt falling in love for the first time with the beautiful Katherine and eventually being turned into a vampire but it didn't!! I felt that the book repeated what I had already seen in the TV programmes from flashbacks of Salvatore bothers loves. I failed to feel any connection at all with any of the characters. By watching the original TV series I was looking forwards to finding out more about Katherine, as you know that she is totally besotted with Stefan even now....but you get none of those feelings from the book. To me it seems like a rushed version of a book just to sell more copies.

The one thing I did like however about this book was how Damon felt about what he calls becoming a monster....a role reversal for the Salvatores.

I have bough the other 2 books in the series but I have to admit I am not in a rush to read them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written prequel to the TV Series 2 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
This is the first of three book series and for the record I have preordered the other two because personally I think its a good book.

Firstly if you are a Damon fan you will be disappointed because there are few parts that have Damon in this book for two reasons the book is called STEFANS DIARIES and is diarised story of life through Stefans eyes as a 17 / 18 year old leading up to when he becomes a Vampire, secondly Damon is in the confederate army and for the initial part is away.

The book is well written, easy to follow, easy to picture based on the TV series not the original books has all the main characters from the show mentioned. There are parts in the book that relate to flash backs from the series, there are surprising parts about innocent and generous Katherine is, compared to what a manipulative liar she is in the TV series.

I was a bit doubtful at first that this would be any good as many spin off type books have been let downs in the past but I was not disappointed. Read more
