Just Fantastic 6 Oct 2010

The idea of buying this record player was to take me back to my youth, & all the 45s that I have from the early 60s & all the great LPs which were just gathering dust in the loft, & I felt it was time to dust them down, & play them.
However this is much more than a record player? it has a fantastic AM/FM Radio with great FM reception.
It also has a USB slot for playing Mp3 music from a memory stick, it also has an SD card slot, again for playin Mp3 music.
All in all, it looks the part of the 60s, & it has a great sound, it has a solid wooden case, which comes in red or black, a modern auto change record deck, which plays all formats of records,7" 10" & 12" records, 45/33/78 speeds.
The only thing I would have liked, they have put the controls on the side, I would have liked them on the front, but that is just me.
This recrd player is very good quality, & very good value for money, I can recomend that you.....BUY IT!!

Tracks of my tears 14 April 2011
Colour Name:Black
The Steepletone SRP 1R 11 retro record player certainly looks the part, with its sleek black leatherette finish and compact box. Sadly, it cannot compare with the old Dansette players of the 1950s and 1960s because its sound is thin and the volume is wispy. The absence of bass and treble controls means that you cannot adjust the sound quality and the overall effect is tinny. I couldn't live with the poor aural effect and returned it, so my search for a decent machine to play my vinyl record collection goes on. - Rockin' Robert

This Steepletone record player really looks the business. Of all the ones that are currently on the market this is the closest to what record players used to look like in the 60's. For nostalgia in looks this really does do it as a talking point in your living room. However I do question the quality of sound. To me the sound is very 'boxy' and lacks the richness of the good record players of years gone by. The price on even Amazon seems to vary from £100 to £180. For that price I would have expected a lot better sound than what is produced here.

If you are interested there are extra bits that come with it (but no centre spindle to allow stacking of several records - probably a good idea because that did cause damage to records!). There is an adaptor for singles that have had their centres punched out for juke boxes. There is a radio (which sounds good on FM). You can play mp3's from a memory stick or sd card. Though why anyone would want to do this I have no idea! Most people will have other better means of playing their mp3's.

In conclusion I give it 5 stars for looks but only 3 stars for sound. Don't get me wrong I don't think the sound is bad I just think for the money it should be a lot better!

Incidentally the one I received had to go back because it played albums ok but there was a fault when playing singles. Firstly the sound was a bit ropey (like singing through water). I suspect the speed wasn't exactly right. Secondly the arm often lifted before the ending of the record.
