Product Description

A biography of the group Steely Dan, the American jazz rock band who have sold over 50 million albums during a career lasting over 20 years. It tells of how Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, a couple of cynical New York jazz fans wormed their way into a record contract and astonished critics with their first album "Can't Buy a Thrill" in 1973. Nine albums later, after "Aja", had topped charts everywhere, they were among the biggest selling acts in the world. Then they quit, only to reform in 1993. Steely Dan were different from the rest of rock's super-sellers. They rarely gave interviews. After some early bad experiences on the road, they refused to tour. They didn't have their photographs taken so few people knew what they looked like. Steely Dan wasn't even a proper group; it was two musicoans and a producer, yet every top notch player in the world lined up to appear on their albums. In this book the author, who is the editor and publisher of "Metal Leg", the UK based Steely Dan fanzine, finally draws back the veil of secrecy that has surrounded Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Here is the story of how they made their music and lived their lives.

If you ever wondered where they really came from, and how they became the greatest band in the world then this book is for you.

It is a veritable encyclopaedia of information from the humble beginnings of Walter & Donald, through their formative years up to the present (1994) and the latest incarnation, Steely Dan Orchestra.

You can find out who played what and who was cut from what track plus all the trials and tribulations of a band that strived for perfection and nearly got there.

This is a valuable source of reference for all fans and a fascinating insight for the curious.

I wanted to know more about Steely Dan and this book provided me with plenty of facts and figures. The prose, however, is dire and the author makes subjective statements that damage the book's credibility. I was surprised to read "Through with Buzz" described as a "throwaway" track. In my (subjective) opinion, Through with Buzz is a quite remarkable song ... one of few songs in the Steely Dan canon to feature a string arrangement, and a companion piece to "Charlie Freak", begging the question: "Was Pretzel Logic originally intended as a concept album?".

It gave a good insight into the creation of the music and where Walter and Donald came from initially. it was well researched and definitely an interesting read if you're a Steely Dan fan. It is a shame that neither Walter or Donald were interviewed for the book although there was lots of other interview source material used. My biggest criticism is that it wasn't that well written. The text seemed a little muddled at times and I found myself going back over bits to try to understand what they meant. On the whole though, I enjoyed reading the book.
