5.0 out of 5 stars The "Steelflower Chronicles" book 1, 19 Oct 2008
By Book Addict - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Kaia Steelflower goes by many names and certainly many professions; exiled by her people the G'mai for her lack of Power, she instead becomes a mercenary, thief and assassin. Life is fairly straightforward until she steals from the wrong person, but is seems almost that Kaia was compelled to remove the contents found in the pockets of a hairy barbarian and then protect him in a sword fight against the city guards.

On the run, Kaia's "entourage" steadily increases as a missing G'mai prince insists he accompanies her on her travels, as do a lute player, a young thief in training and a twinned G'mai pair. Although Kaia longs to lose these people travelling with her, she has no idea how important they will become to her.

Kaia is a marvellous leading lady; coming to terms with the fact she is now responsible for someone else's safety rather than just her own, initially disbelieving that she really does have Power (and a lot of it) and unwilling to tie herself to the G'mai prince who claims she is his other half. Despite these obstacles, Kaia still intends to pay the blood debt she owes and soon finds herself the target of the deadliest assassins in the country. It's a good job she and a few of her companions are so skilled with their weapons.

The ending of "Steelflower" is rather abrupt and despite the budding relationship between Kaia and G'mai prince Darik do not expect any hot bedroom action (in fact there is none at all in this book). Kaia refuses to believe she is Darik's destined other half (despite all the obvious signs she displays proving she is) yet her exile from G'mailhallan and her conviction that she possesses no Power whatsoever makes her believe she is unworthy of a match. I would also like to stress that Kaia is not one of these overly annoying heroines so determined to prove herself capable that she fails to heed the advice of others and throws herself into fights she cannot possibly win. Any fight this woman is involved in she wins, even against Darik. I now eagerly hope that LC pens a sequel to this book as quickly as possible as many issues still remain inconclusive despite the final, action fraught battle scenes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and absorbing, 18 Sep 2008
By L. E. Price "Lauren" (UK) - See all my reviews

Absorbing right from the very beginning, I ended up reading the entire book in one sitting. Saintcrow turns the traditional 'elvish' model on it's head to give you a completely different glimpse of the genre. The heroine of the book is strong with an underlying vulnerability that makes her more accessable to the reader. This book is not a stand alone story, things heat up just as it ends leaving you desperate for the next installment. It's primary focus is that of the heroine discovering herself and her past which appears to have very different versions depending on who you ask. This book lays the groundwork for the main story arc without leaving you feeling shortchanged. I would definately recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy or strong female lead characters.
