Well, it is Steeleye Span, but ..., 10 May 2003
Overall rather disappointing. It is not, of course, a selection of their greatest hits (as implied on the cover, which is also rather naughty in claiming a running time of 80 minutes: whilst this may be technically true, it is only the case when you take into account all the snippets of adverts of other items from their catalogue: none of which are long enough to make them worthwhile, even if you were interested in the bands (which I’m not)). The actual running time of the concert is less than 53 minutes. The performance is somewhat lacklustre, though Maddy is certainly in fine voice. Presentation is rather amateurish in my view - not many cameras (and those that are on stage are obtrusive). It dives straight in, and ends just as abruptly. The documentation is pathetic: 4 pages of adverts, one page of minimal info about the tracks, and we don't even get a listing of the members of the band. But, hey, it is Steeleye span. There’s not much else out there (I also have a 25th anniversary tour video, which is also disappointing). If you love Steeleye, then you have got to have this, warts and all.

Steeleye Span DVD, 10 Mar 2003
Billed as containing all of thier greatest hits, but that is a matter of opinion. I thought the lack-lustre staging and camera men on stage in obvious positions and distracting clothing took much away from this performance. Maddy Prior, as always, displaying her talent through her unique voice was not well supported on this occasion. It seems the band just may have had one gig too many, and probably should have left it alone. Sad, but I found this an uninspiring performance with no information on the cover about venue, date or any band information whatsoever. In short, an average performance poorly filmed and presented - a shame for an old fan like me!

Steeleye Span make their first appearance on DVD with a recording of a show from their twentieth annivesary tour in 1989, which originally appeared on VHS in '91. It draws quite heavily on songs from "Tempted and Tried", the album they were promoting at the time. This is no bad thing however, as the numbers from "Tempted" are all strong. The catchy "Jack Hall", in particular, benefits from a longer istrumental play-out than appears on the album.Steeleye perform the songs with their customary energy, especially Maddy Prior, who gets to dance during several tracks, most notably on "Cam Ye O'er Frae France". Needless to say, Maddy is in fine voice throughout. Some other old favourites are there, including "Gaudete", "All Around My Hay", and "Thomas The Rhymer". "The Weaver" is given a very clever arrangement, with the rhythm section suggesting the workings of a mechanised loom. It's good to see a Steeleye Span concert finally appear on DVD. Hopefully we can look forward to more being released on this format in the future.
