The finest Hop Wilson-collection,
By
This review is from: Steel Guitar Flash (Audio CD)
Harding "Hop" Wilson played blues with an Elmore James flavor on an eight-string table steel guitar (slide, but no pedal). This lengthy 29-track compilation clocks in at over 74 minutes, and it includes Hop Wilson and his small, tight combo backing Fenton Robinson (on a great, swaggering "My Woman Done Quit Me") and Larry Davis (on the slow grind of "Need Your Love To Keep Me Warm"). This is blues, R&B and proto-rock n' roll played with grit and determination. Hop Wilson was a powerful vocalist with distinct baritone voice, and his drummer, King Ivory Lee, bangs the hell out of a set which sounds at times like a Salvation Army-reject. A little bit more musical variation would have made for an even stronger set, but the sheer style and talent of Hop Wilson makes for a lot of great music, and there is much to like here.

AMAZING!!!! This is an incredible album - the tone & feel are superb! The balance of tracks from upbeat to slow, grinder blues is just right.....This guy is very well talked of by some very famous musicians, but is still a very obscure name which is a crime, because his music is so much more REAL than some of theirs....this stuff is the real deal, you will not be disapointed

Pianist Elmore Nixon is wonderful, and harpist Willie Jackson supplies some excellent harmonica on one of the finest songs on this lenghty set, the rollicking "Always Been In Love With You". Johnny Winter covers "That Wouldn't Satisfy" on his latest album, and Hop Wilson plays some searing slide guitar on the thumping "You Don't Love Me No More". Other highlights include the driving mid-tempo shuffle "My Woman Has A Black Cat Bone", the soulful slow "I Ain't Got No Woman", and the rollicking, piano-driven "My Woman Done Quit Me". A little bit more musical variation would have made for an even stronger set, but the sheer style and talent of Hop Wilson makes for a lot of great music, and there is much to like here. 1 of 3 people found the following review helpful:
