Product Description

Now starring in Albion - a brand new US comics series plotted by the legendary Alan Moore - the Steel Claw joins the Spider as the next classic British comics character to receive the beautifully packaged hardcover archive treatment! When a lab experiment goes disastrously awry, Louis Crandell discovers that when his right hand - the eponymous steel claw - connects with electricity, he becomes invisible! But to what nefarious ends can he put this new power? Never-before-collected, boasting a stunning new cover by comics legend Brian Bolland (Batman: The Killing Joke), and featuring exclusive new articles exploring the history of the Steel Claw, this collection is the perfect introduction!

Tom Tully is the creator and writer of many classic British boys' comic characters, with a long run on Roy of the Rovers, plus Action's controversial Look Out For Lefty, Battle Action's Johnny Red, Buster's The Leopard of Lime Street, Valiant's Mytek the Mighty, and 2000 AD's The Mind of Wolfie Smith. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Steel Claw still shines bright., 18 Oct 2007
This review is from: The Steel Claw: Vanishing Man (Hardcover)
I was overjoyed to see they had decided to release a compilation of the Steel Claw and The Spider. And it is about time. I think there is enough material for at least a few more collections, and i look foreward hopefully to the day they do so. The artwork is wonderful and the 'dark' feel and style is classic British comic strip at it's best. I loved this book and i loved 'The Spider' book .Why haven't the rest of their stablemates ,the 'British 'Comic strip characters from Lion,Valiant, etc, been considered for re release in this way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it just for the art alone, 8 Mar 2011
By
This review is from: The Steel Claw: Vanishing Man (Hardcover)
This is a high quality reprint of one of the most remarkable british comic characters:Louis Crandall-The Steel Claw. These are his first adventures from 'Valiant'starting in 1962.

Crandall,a lab assistant has a mechanical right hand after losing his fleshy one in a laboratory accident. In yet another accident,he is powerfully electrocuted.Strangely he is not killed but his body is rendered invisible, with just the claw remaining visible.Crandall immediately turns to crime, robbing banks and eventually becoming a meglalomaniac .At critical moments however, the invisibility wears off until he gets another electric shock. This is where much drama is generated as Crandall, pursued by the police, sticks his hand in electric sockets, generators and the middle rails of electric train tracks in his frantic attempts to electrocute himself.(don't try this at home kids)
His role changes through the book, losing his criminal tendencies, and eventually becomes a crime busting secret agent for the rest of his career.

The Jesus Blasco artwork is photo realistic and atmospheric with a very strong sense of time and place with the cars, fashions, hairstyles etc transporting the reader to a world half a century away. Brian Bolland, whoose own style is comparable to Blasco's does an amazing cover.

The actual stories are not particularly scintilating, mainly being extended chase sequences with a lot of suspense, but combined with that art the whole adds up to a great comic.

Being an Action and 2000AD generation kid, this was something from the distant past, glimpsed only in tattered old jumble-sale comics or reprint-laden old annuals. Its nice to see rare old comics from an almost dead genre given such respectful treatment.

This is a great comic and an interesting bit of comics history
It also features a checklist of all the stories and a list of Valiant and Vulcan annuals containing Claw stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars ZZZTTTHHHAAAPPP!!!, 20 Feb 2011
This review is from: The Steel Claw: Vanishing Man (Hardcover)
Excellent reprints of the first three Steel Claw stories from Valiant boys' comic of the 60s/70s by Ken Bulmer, with fabulous b&w artwork by Jesus Blasco, in HB/dj format. For the uninitiated, Louis Crandell's artificial metal hand caused him to become invisible when he touched a live wire. Initially, he used this for crime but then mended his ways and became a good guy/secret agent and had many adventures which are as thrilling today as they were 40+ years ago. Also contains a complete Steel Claw checklist for collectors.
