As I said in my review of Philip Sayce's last album; Ruby Electric, his follow up album had to be a little special and, unfortunately, as much as I wanted to love this offering, it is not the killer album that it could so easily have been!
The production of a "live" feeling studio album is not a bad idea, but this is marred by far too much distortion in PS's guitar and, worse still, in his vocals.
It starts off reasonably well with the title track "Steamroller" but the following track "Stung By A Woman" holds the distortion and falsetto vocals that I'm afraid spoil things somewhat and this follows through to the awful "The Bull" BUT, that said, rays of brilliance shine through in the quiet "Marigold" and the simply stunningly beautiful closer (and all instrumental) "Aberystwyth" which for my money shows perfectly what much of the rest of the album is hiding - a brilliant guitarist and songwriter.
Added to the moans and groans here is the fact that this album also only weighs in at a measly 35 minutes or so, which, if this were a stunner of an album, would be just about forgiveable, but in light of the fact that it is not a killer, then this doesn't really give the fans their money's worth.
All in all, not a bad album by a long chalk, but it really could have been so much more - shame! - but nevertheless, I AM looking forward to the absolute killer that this man can and will produce!
