Book Description

6 Sep 2010
Discover original steampunk tales in this anthology of stories written before there were actual rocketships, atomic power, digital computers, or readily available electricity. The modern day steampunk genre is a reinventing of the past through the eyes of its inventors and adventures, but this collection is from real Victorians and Edwardians who saw the future potential of science and its daring possibilities. Steam-powered automobiles, submarines, and robots are featured alongside great airships and spaceships in these bold and creative stories of hope, triumph, and disaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars Return to the Well 23 Jan 2012
By TeriB - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
The editors have put together an anthology of well-chosen, beautifully written, Victorian science fiction. This is steampunk in its nascent state, and a must-have for both readers and would-be writers of steampunk. You can't go back again, despite the efforts of modern writers to write within the mind and culture of that period. We are all molded by our culture and experience, and we cannot un-know what we know... and therefore, many of these particular stories would not be written as they are now, even by the most religious devotee to Victorian sci-fi.
It's a real pleasure to return to the original perspective from that period, with their combination of sophistication and naivete and their energy and (mostly) optimism for the future.

5 stars from me, and if the editors find enough quality work to publish another volume, I'll read that too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just a little thing 22 Sep 2012
By julio cesar figueroa castillo - Published on Amazon.com

It doesn't worth the effort to buy and read this book, is only for people with a real interest in XIX century stuff, the short stories and the novellas contained in the anthology were "forgotten" for a good reason, they are just curiosities, after you read the volume you understand why Wells, Verne, Stevenson and Shelley stand on their ground as the real sciences romantics of their era, they were over the average, ant the material in this book isn't.
