DVD Description

Regular weekly meetings in a Turkish Bath in London bring eight women of varying backgrounds to a greater understanding of each other, of themselves, and of their own relationships with the men in their lives.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2.4 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Mono ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: This is a story of a group of women overcoming several obstacles by helping each other out, even if that means just listening. Seven different women whose backgrounds are filled in by flashbacks and narration are together in a steambath on ladies' day. Violet (Diana Dors) is the maternal manager of the steambath, and one of the issues to be resolved is how to save the bath from being shut down by the authorities. Nancy (Vanessa Redgrave) is suddenly a single mother of three after being deserted by her husband. Her good friend Sarah (Sarah Miles) has neither children nor husband, even an ex-husband, yet she can empathize with Nancy's increasing loneliness. Josie (Patti Love) is an outgoing, talkative woman whose sex life is her main interest at the moment, and other women include a somewhat reserved mother-and-daughter duo (Brenda Bruce and Felicity Dean). Personal traumas are revealed and shared, and a plan to save the steambath is also cooked up. This was to be the last film for both Diana Dors and Joseph Losey who died not long after the feature was wrapped. ...Steaming

I like this movie. It is reasonably faithful to the stage play I saw many years ago, and hey... copious female nudity isn't a bad thing either. What really gets up my craw with this dvd (and also this company's release of "The Admirable Crighton") is that it is the 4:3 full frame version. The picture composition seems wrong. The character on the left will be wholly within the frame and the character on the right would only be half in. In this day and age of the wide screen television set, would it be too much to ask that the movie be released in it's proper aspect ratio? I hate it when movies are cropped at the sides, and I thought that we got over that phase when video made way for dvd. Otherwise, it is a "bare bones" dvd. No extras whatsoever...unless you count subtitles for the hard of hearing an extra. Doubly upsetting because I paid twice it's original price. You see, I bought it from an amazon marketplace seller as the title seems to be Out Of Print. So be warned: Over-priced and cropped for good measure. The sad thing is, I doubt if there is a market for a re-release of this title. Maybe, one day....

Oh, by the way, this dvd release plays Regions 2, 4 and 5 and the picture quality is nice and sharp. Mono sound only, but you hardly need 5.1 surround for a movie like this one. If you can get past the "half-people" in the picture, you'll find this movie both funny and sad. Diana Dors was diagnosed with cancer shortly after she finished making this film and died 2 years later.

The Secret World of women...

Well, sorta... this is a film of feminine indulgeance, gossip, and stuff, served with very British flare. A group of women sit around naked talking about their lives, what should or could have been in a steambath. The characters are universally likeable, the type of women one would definately take home. I enjoyed the film, but the story could have had a bit more to it. Recomended for couples.

This is avery slow and drawn out movie that at times sends you to sleep rather grip your interest. I found it difficult to watch.
