5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent little collection 26 Sept. 2013

Steampunk Salmagundi is a collection of stories and articles by John Reppion previously published in the pages of the semi-annual Steampunk Magazine. Reppion is widely known as a comic book writer, working in collaboration with his wife Leah Moore on series such as The Complete Dracula and Damsels. Just looking at their recently published series Sherlock Holmes and The Liverpool Demon, Victoriana and the bizarre is never far from Mr Reppion's mind and in this self published collection he lets his interest run riot with highly enjoyable results.

Two incredibly odd and incredicbly original short stories about a long lost band and a pulp Dectective adventure are followed by some rather excellent articles about a long lost martial art and the alleged supernatural experiments of Thomas Edison.

If you tastes turn towards the odd and bizarre then Steampunk Salmagundi is a marvellous little collection showcasing the inner workings and interests of a very talented writer.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great steampunk sampler 15 Dec. 2013

This is a cracking little steampunk taster by someone who knows what he's doing. I found this ebook by accident and within a few pages I'd lost all trepidation regarding the abilities of (to me) an unknown author, John Reppion. I was gripped from the start by the language and the unfolding story. The first, The Incredible Steam Band, is an eerie tale of musical tragedy, not an easy thing to pull off on the page, but his descriptions of the sounds emanating from the machines are utterly convincing and evocative. I found the second story, Doppler And the Madness Engine, genuinely creepy so that, by the time I got to one character "glaring down at the corpse with the eyes of a lunatic", I wanted to hide under the duvet. (Which would have been useless because the Thing In Question would probably have been waiting there.) The last two pieces -- Baritsu and Edison's Ghost Machine -- are intriguing curiosities I'm still working out. Bravo!
