5.0 out of 5 stars Reminded me of Robert Harris 4 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
It was exciting finding such a great new author. It reminded me of Robert Harris because I was learning AND having a great time with an increasingly gripping plot in the company of enjoyable characters. In this case the world I learnt about was that of art, painting, forgery and the detection of forgery. The thriller aspect was fun, I felt it did not treat itself too seriously, which was spot on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Artful, well crafted novel 5 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Richard Mitchell must know his art! The story line for Stealing Venus is based around the forgery of art masterpieces. The detail with which Mitchell explains the forgery process makes me wonder if he hasn't tried a bit of reproduction work himself ;-)

The plot rattles along, keeping you wanting to turn the pages to see what happens next. I would never have guessed the denouement in a million years, very clever twist. If you have a Kindle, you should invest immediately as for the price of a coffee you will get hours of entertainment.

I downloaded this book knowing nothing about either book or author. I have just finished it, having been unable to put it down. The story is about Will, a painter who was (wrongly) jailed for forging Old Masters, meeting up with a beautiful arts expert for an insurance company. Together they uncover a very unlikely web of forgery and violence. Will had learned about the skills involved in deliberate forgery while in prison from a likeable old criminal forger who was nothing like Maestro Tancredi in What's Bred in the Bone by Robertson Davies, or even Francis Cornish, but his faking methods are the same. The violence and sheer evil of some of the characters make the story a little hard to believe, but at the same time "unputdownable". An enjoyable pageturner.

This was enjoyable. Good crime read, with not the everyday settings. I know nothing about art really, and I quite like novels that take me into new areas. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable art thriller
An enjoyable light read set in art world. My only gripe is an annoying tendency to over describe food or clothing which gets in the way of the storyline. Read more
