With the completion of Stealing the Show, I've now read all of Christina Jones' published works (including the 2001 Nothing to Lose). So now what do I do?? I can't bear to wait until 2002 for another. I cannot find the words to describe what a fabulous storyteller she is. She finds these quirky worlds to bring us - in this case, the life of "travelers" who put on small fairs. Then, she always draws such rich and complex characters. The bad guys aren't total caricatures, the good guys have flaws. Nell and Jack are so wonderful - Nell refusing to see her beauty, seemingly willing to follow traditional paths (not just the old rides, but the idea of a marriage to make her family happy) but ultimately following a strong moral compass. Jones uses Jack to illustrate how these same issues apply out in the "real" (non-fair) world, since he struggles with following with the family business and making a marriage that appears to be perfect. Stealing the Show deals with some hard issues - spouse abuse, abortion (and its impact on men), infidelity. Without getting to heavy, it also doesn't treat these subjects lightly. I highly recommend this - and any other Christina Jones - book. (And look for the traveling fair in Jumping to Conclusions!)
