Product Description

There are many ingredients necessary to make an adventure. For example take one young and enthusiastic Irishman, a thirst to visit far away places a love of the sea and a capacity to observe life and the adventure can begin.John Molloy in 496 well written pages takes the reader around the world on a journey to great ports and out of the way places, through freezing Atlantic waters to the sometimes placid waters of the Pacific islands. As his journey through youth begins,so does his understanding of the culture of his ship board life and the traits good and bad of his companions. He brings an insight into the often mysterious habits of the people in countries half a world away from his homeland of Ireland.Side by side with his skills as a seaman he shows through his exciting writing that he has further skills which give his book an authority which surely will stand as a record of life at sea in a time of great change for seafarers ashore and afloat. A gripping book illustrated with b/w photographs. Dont miss it. Capt.Douglas.

From the Publisher

In steady as she goes John Molloy writes a vivid and entertaining and sometimes earthy description about his time as a deck officer with irish shipping. as a boy he was facinated by the big merchant ships that called to his home port city of waterford, and with his imagination fired he began his career as an apprentice on the irish cedar.unusually for such narratives the author wears his heart on his sleeve as he recounts the story of this thrilling adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A memorable read 21 Oct 2013
By john
I read this book thinking it would be another dull sea going saga, but much to my surprise it was a fantastic read. This story will grip you from the early adventures of this seventeen year old deck apprentice and hold you in his grip as he relates the world of seamen as he grows into manhood over four years. His love affair with the beautiful Japanese girl Hiroko will squeeze your heart.
A great read don't miss it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking read! 6 April 2013
As an ex merchant seaman I thouroughly enjoyed John Molloy's account of his voyage on the Irish Ash more so as there are many parallels between it and a voyage I was a crew member on about a year after his account. I was on the MV Salvina and we also had similar charters to Japan and believe it or not I also had a fling with a Japanese girl named Hiroko which brought back many happy memories of a lifestyle which has now sadly passed. Many aspects of the book I found simply uncanny to say the least. Congratulations John on a wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sun, sea, sushi and a whole lot more! 4 July 2009
This book is a must read, from young adults to the not so young, it has something to suit all tastes. For the young and carefree, it is full of sun, sea, sex and sushi. For those that are still young at heart, they can relive their youth through the eyes of well travelled John Molloy where there is laughter to be had on every page.

For those that want to experience the joys of travelling the world from a sailors perspective, they will experience this and a whole lot more. Get ready for a trip of a lifetime as you set sail from Melbourne to Beijing to the sunny shores of the Carribean. You will have the sail of your life!!
