Reader's review on Amazon.com
"If you are spending tens of thousands of pounds on a steadicam, then the (comparatively small) investment in this book is well worthwhile. It contains everything you could possibly ever need to know on the use, techniques and aesthetics of the steadicam." - Focus magazine
From the Publisher
The invention of the Steadicam has been revolutionary in terms of shooting films. From static cameras that could only move on tracks and needed long and careful setting up, the Steadicam has freed up the camera operator to follow the movement, wherever it is happening. This book describes the impact Steadicam has had, and continues to have, on film-making and the effects it creates on the screen, on the audience, and how it stimulates the director's creativity. Examples of its use on films such as 'Bound for Glory', 'Rocky', 'Marathon Man' and 'The Shining' are described. It begins with a brief history of camera movement. It continues with a description of the Steadicam structure and the basic principles by which it functions. It then goes on to show how the Steadicam was first utilised in films and is illustrated by a series of model-film sequences in which the Steadicam was used. A series of interviews and quotes by professionals who explain the use of the Steadicam in filmmaking are also included - with Garrett Brown, the inventor of the Steadicam as the principal interviewee.
