Product Description

Review

For this retrieval of the lost histories of black Britain Mr Fryer has my deep gratitude. An invaluable book, which manages the rare feat of combining scholarship with readability (Salman Rushdie )

A fascinating account of the growth of the black community in Britain over the past centuries. (Guardian )

'This book is rare in its mastery of the constant historical contradiction: range and at the same time event. Two thousand years is a long time; Fryer never loses his grip in time or place' (CLR James )

Product Description

Staying Power is recognised as the definitive history of black people in Britain, an epic story that begins with the Roman conquest and continues to this day.

In a comprehensive account, Peter Fryer reveals how Africans, Asians and their descendants, previously hidden from history, have profoundly influenced and shaped events in Britain over the course of the last two thousand years.

This new edition includes a foreword by Paul Gilroy explaining the genesis of the book and its continuing significance in black history today.

i have read this book 3 times and am now on my 4th outing with it. it holds a wealth of information for those wanting an insight into this definitive part of history, without some of the more polarised views that particular literature on the subject of slavery possess. it's good. peter fryer names his sources and all of these are easily checked and cross checked. i recommend this book to black and white, asian and indian alike, who may want an objective tool in summarising over 400 years of 'justified' murder, rape, theft and genocidal madness against a great people in their own right. well worth the money.

This book is fascinating and well written. It traces the history of Black people in Britain, who have made significant contributions to culture and history for several centuries. It also recounts movements against slavery and later against racism. Many things which are left out of the history books are here in this very serious and readable work.

Powerful read! 6 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
It was one of the best books on black slavery I have ever read. The writer, Peter Fryer, has done extensive research which can be checked out and thus having validity. He deals with controversial areas from:

Black males and how they were sexually demonised
Black people who were in the army in Britain when Britain was under Roman rule
Black people's contribution to English war and yet when they fought for the country they were told to go back home...
The Queen's grandmother who refered to the Africans as 'blackamoors' ánd wished for them to go back to Africa.
How white women were seen as pure as snow while the black women were viewed as erotic and promiscous

The subjects are so many. Many of the perception that white people hold about blacks are still held today but unconsciously especially regarding black sexual potency.

This book is a must for blacks Asians and whites who will see that African slavery was brutal and the justified rape which went on unchallenged.
