This book was a real pleasure to read. It made the sometimes murky field of confidence intervals almost crystal clear. -some of the formulas do however need to be skipped to keep one's sanity. Overall it is the best book on statistics I have ever read.

Useful and well written overview of the calculation of confidence intervals, and the reasons we all should be using them. The diskette provides a handy program to take the sting out of the maths, so none of us have any excuse. If you are looking for detailed mathematical explanations of probability distribution functions however, you will need to look elsewhere.

This is a review of the first edition. The authors are renowned in the field of Medical Statistics and they have been involved in writing articles about statistics for the BMJ to try and improve the quality of submitted papers. This book collects together some of those ideas and gives an invaluable guide to presenting clear and rigorous statistical analysis. The authors make their subject accessible which is one of the main complaints with statistics texts.

The authors present a strong case against the excessive use of hypothesis testing and argue that confidence intervals actually offer a more informative and useful alternative to p-values. The book gives their general argument and then details for calculating confidence intervals for different types of analysis. The odds ratio and survival times chapters seemed more rushed and less clear than the earlier ones but these are very specialised analysis and not something I have got to grips with. The final chapters are a checklist for publishing statistical analysis in medical journals.

There is a new edition which updates the chapters and extends them and I have it on order now. Even if you can only get hold of the older edition it is still well worth reading.
