Product Description

Product Description

For Statistics courses found within Economics, Business, Marketing, or Statistics departments that are required for the Economics or Business major.

Newbold's strength has been its unerring accuracy and statistical precision. It is also at a mathematically higher level than most business statistics texts. This edition focuses on maintaining the statistical integrity of past editions while modernizing the text by integrating the use of statistical software, adding new examples and exercises (many with real data), and an emphasis on data analysis and interpretation of output. The fifth edition features both Excel and Minitab.

1.0 out of 5 stars Total garbage, 3 Jan 2008
This book is utter rubbish. It is a 1000 page convuluted mess. It doesnt explain ANYTHING clearly. Now, I go to the LSE, but it is written is such a snobbish way that it makes you feel like you have an IQ of about 30. The authors obviously thought it would be a weakness, and would make them look dumb to actually explain stuff clearly, so instead they give the most confusing and poor explainations, which are very rarely clear and dont stress the key points enough. They assume that you are Einstein, and lets face it, you have to be to understand the way they put things. (Or at the vey least Stephen Hawking). Amazingly, even though the book is nearly 1000 pages long there are no examples for some topics. Newbold, just cos you explain something clearly it doesnt make YOU stupid. A stats book should be a methods book, a how to do it book, dare I say it a cookbook. But, no, they have to make even the simplest things as comlicated as possible to show the reader how clever they are. I dont care if you dont approve of methods based maths books. If thats how u feel go away and write a book about complex analysis - not a STATISTICS book! The layout is absolutely horrible and a pain in the ass to look a, and topics aren't introduced properly, and are split up across the book. ALL the stuff on regression should be in a SINGLE chapter, not bits of it randomly strewn across 900 pages just cos the author thinks he's too good to teach. Going back to the layout - its horrible with key stuff not standing out enough. I think I could write a 150 page book covering all this material a lot more clearly and less arrogantly too.

Its also worth mentioning that Howard Anton and Ken Binmore manage to write a pedagogical text book for linear algebra and calculus respectively. These 2 topics are intrinsically 'harder' than stats, but these authors still make a textbook that actually explains the concepts clearly.

Also this book is extremely expensive and DEFINITLY NOT worth it. Buy the edexcel s1-s6 books instead. Instead you're better off giving the money to a hobo so they can spend it on white lightning from lidl. But WHATEVER you do DO NOT buy this. Utter crap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for business student, 9 May 2008

I have used this book for my second year quantitative methods study in my university. Thanks to this book that I can understand the whole module very well, otherwise I will fail the exam!!! It might not be the best book in Statistics but it is not as bad as the last reviewer said. I also lent this book to my friend who also found it useful and clear. In general, I do feel that this book is a perfect match for my module and it helped me a lot!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book !, 13 April 2009

I was asked to privately tutor someone who had to pass an Econometrics module for her degree but had never done any more than the very basics of statistics. My knowledge of Statistics was 35 years old and I knew nothing about Econometrics.

Using this book I got the student a good pass in about 4 weeks. This book has [ almost ] everything. I would thoroughly recommend it.
