Book Description

30 April 2012 Railway Detective
1857. Only when the bonfire finally dies down, the charred remains of his body are found. Who would possibly want to murder a man so universally liked? It 's the question Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck and Sergeant Victor Lemming ask when they arrive in Exeter at the request of the South Devon Railway. Yet, as they investigate the stationmaster 's life, they realize he is not as popular as they first believed. With a scorned jilted lover, a resentful colleague and a violent elder brother among the many suspects, the detectives must use all their skill and wit to solve the case.

3.0 out of 5 stars Running out of steam? 4 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I've read all the Railway Detective books and always await a new one with interest. The story line in this one clung to the railway by the skin of its teeth - it could have been a murder anywhere and could have been written with no connection with the railway whatsoever. All it needed was a different protagonist and a whole new series could have been born. What spoilt it for me though was the laboured rehash (as in every railway detective novel except the first) of how Victor can't bear to be parted from his wife and family, how the military-minded Superintendent Tallis can ruin every investigation, how Maddy pines for Robert when he goes away, how her father harps on about how 'his' railway is the only one... These are getting to be formulaic annoyances and they take up too much room in what would be an otherwise welcome addition to the canon. I have to say I spotted the culprit almost as soon as he was introduced and was disappointed in the ending - simply because the whole book built to an event that, as someone else said, was rushed. I think that Mr Marston can do better - and I look forward to the next one in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric Railways, not alot of air in it. 18 April 2012
Format:Hardcover
Once again the Railway Detective steams into another case that had me guessing right to the very end in this well constructed page turner. When the remains of a charred body are discovered in the embers of the town`s annual Bonfire Night celebration turn out to be that of the popular stationmaster of Exter St David railway station, it is not long before the renown Railway Detective Robert Colbeck and his assistant Victor Leeming are on the spot.We have a wide number of suspects that often has us shunted into dead ends, but once again Edward Marston brings it all together with a twist that comes right out of the blue. This is the 9th outing for our Railway Detective and he goes from strength to strength and i for one can not wait for the next excursion for our dynamic detective.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best in the series. 22 Jun 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This new title from the Railway Detective series has certainly received mixed reviews. As a regular reader it is still one of the best Victorian detective series available today. Specifically to this book I was particularly disappointed in the solution to the case which to my mind came from "left-field" and I agree with other reviewers that the old cliche's of Leeming leaving his family, Tallis being a right royal pain and Maddy's wedding plans were all re-hashed, seemingly filling space (I've never skipped sections of this series before, as I did with this book!). The link to the railways was generally speaking tenuous and Mr. Marston really can DO better than this, "The Silver Locomotive" is still my favorite from the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Railway Detective triumphs again! 1 Aug 2012
By Malc
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The series of stories continues. The good thing about these tales is the relaxed attitude they exude. They are good clean wholesome fun and the central characters become acquaintances rather than just names on a page. I hope that Colbeck finally gets married and that Edward Marston continues to write these thoroughly enjoyable who done its.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't read if you don't want to know the ending. 29 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have read most of the Railway Detective books and can say I only read them when nothing else is readily at hand and in the hope that the current one is better than the previous. I actually bought it and boy did I regret it. This one was a mess from start to finish with the worst ending I have ever had the displeasure to read.
The author takes us through a maze of a plot with a host of suspects surfacing from nowhere only to fade away.
The killers came out of nowhere in the final pages. There is absolutely no hint of their existence anywhere up to that point. I had to re read several chapters in case I missed something, but no I had not. I was left with the impression that the author was in a rut, invented two characters and just threw them in to get the book finished and out of the way.
Dreadful.
