We all know Armin is a top quality mixer and it is worth beginning this review by saying that this album is, unsurprisingly, mixed to perfection. If you are looking for a snapshot of trance in 2011, then this album is the first place to start every time, as the title `A State of Trance 2011' suggests.
In terms of song quality, taking all of the ASoT offerings, I feel that 2004-6 were better than albums that have gone since; whether, as another reviewer mentions, this is down to Armin's odd song choices or just what has been made in the trance society I don't know. Regardless, I was a little concerned that I would experience some disappointment again with 2011. However, the tracks on this album are, in my opinion, much better and have a certain class about them that the last few ASoTs appear to have lacked.
I think the main reason for this is the significant reducing of the number of tracks with vocals. What 2007-09 in particular seemed to have too much of, for me, was dominating vocals that often damaged what was a decent trance song underneath. I love vocals in trance, but only if they add to the song rather than killing it with overpowering tones. This has improved very much in 2011, and those songs that do contain vocals seem to be far mellower, with the voice integrating with the rest of the track rather than potentially destroying it. I think Armin has 'gone back to his roots' a little bit with these sort of selections - his recent artist album 'Mirage' was quite poor in my opinion, largely because of his new found love for the guest vocalist.
This said, I still don't think we get any true classics on this album, not in comparison to my two favourites 2005 and 2006 anyway. I still can't get enough of tracks such as '808,' 'Emotional Void,' 'Shipwrecked' and 'Your Loving Arms' today, whereas somehow I can't see this happening with tracks on this album. I guess only time will tell, and again, perhaps Armin's choice is dictated by what is out there, not by his selections.
It's worth a buy this one, and it is probably the best ASoT installation since 2006 in my opinion.
