2.0 out of 5 stars good start, predictable cheesy ending, 17 Sep 2003
started well and was quite gripping... sets the scene nicely but almost makes you want the americans to fail in dealing with this cos its more exciting. The heroic americans save the day of course. I dont mind it being a bit predictable but this was not just that, but cheesy and patronising to read in the end.
pathetic. they should give the first half of the story to someone else and get them to end it more interestingly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worthwhile., 26 Oct 1999

The "op-centre" series seems to be only a vehicle for TC to cash in on his name. The plot is thin, and the characters as one-dimensional as they get. State of Siege is probably not the worst of the Op-Centre books, but it's still a waste of time. If you want the real TC stuff, stick to the Jack Ryan novels. While not always at the top, they are way better than this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Off-centre, 20 Oct 1999

"A powerful profile of America's defence, intelligence and crisis management technology....", well, no. The good guys are all American. The bad guys are foreign and swarthy, or foreign and nasty to women, or both. Our hero has given up the life of saving the world so that he can save his family. What a guy. The UN is painted as an ineffectual bunch of toy-soldiers led by an idealist (ok, he may have a point), and the only people who can save the world are....the Americans. You get the idea I was UN-impressed? The characters are cardboard cut-outs and the plot limps along to an astonishingly predictable climax (guess who shoots the last bad guy?). As an example, Two-thirds of the way into the book, the chief bad guy escapes from a hospital, having killed a few ambassadors and cops, and is not mentioned again until the end of the book..no chase, no clues, no story! I fully expected to see a sunset on the back cover for our hero to ride into. Tom Clancy's solo books, such as Red October, were detailed and realistic. It seems the books he 'creates' are much, much less so. However, it was kind of him to leave the start of his next book as the ending to this one.Mr Clancy, please write a book on your own...Red October 2?

5.0 out of 5 stars This was a brilliantly plotted book, full credit to Tom!
"Op-Centre State of Seige",was a brilliant book. The terrorist attacks were wonderfully realistic, and so were the descriptions of characters throughout the book. Read more
