A "page turner" if there ever was one. A thrilling ride from the theft of a nuclear warhead, the search for it and the resulting possibility of full scale Nuclear War. Having worked in the Space Program / Defense Industry, all the tools are there, secrets are disclosed, and there are the mind-boggling antics of the top U.S. and Soviet Government Officials. Written by a former member of the U.S. Defense Department you can only imagine that they are true. There are twists and turns at every fork in the road. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the book itself, glued to your hands. Put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on your door !!!!!

Middle of the road again

I followed this book immediately after reading Agent of Influence, and found my sentiments from that one bleeding over to this one as well. Again, I appreciated that it moved quickly and I could finish it in a long afternoon on the beach, but the story was SO cliche. I didn't mind that it was terribly dated, but again...it's all been done. So...3 stars.
Average thriller about mad Nuclear gamesmanship

State Scarlet is a very dated book about a rogue U.S solider getting his hands on a portable nuke. Both the U.S.S.R and U.S wish to stop him, for their own purposes. The chase is cliche, but the book's strength is in how it portrays how American politicans use circumstances to further their own agenda. The Soviets here are more than just one-dimensional heavys, but they are still not interesting. It must have been scary for its day though.
