Review

Starving the Anger Gremlin does an excellent job of examining the harmful effects of anger. Kate Collins-Donnelly clearly explains how irrational thoughts influence negative emotions such as anger. She also helps readers understand how they can change their reactions to events by changing their thinking. Starving the Anger Gremlin is a well-constructed manual on anger management that will undoubtedly help children and adolescents. Read it and enjoy! -- Jerry Wilde, Ph.D., author of Hot Stuff to Help Kids Chill Out: The Anger Management Book -- --Jerry Wilde, Ph.D., author of Hot Stuff to Help Kids Chill Out: The Anger Management Book

From the Inside Flap

Meet the anger gremlin: a troublesome pest whose favourite meal is your anger, and the more he eats the angrier you get! There's only one way to stop him: starve him of angry feelings and behaviours, and make him disappear.

This imaginative workbook shows young people how to starve their anger gremlin and control their anger effectively. Made up of engaging and fun activities, it helps them to understand why they get angry and how their anger affects themselves and others, and teaches them how to manage angry thoughts and behaviours. The tried-and-tested programme, based on effective cognitive behavioural therapy principles, can be worked through by a young person on their own or with a practitioner or parent, and is suitable for children and young people aged 10+.

Starving the Anger Gremlin is easy to read and fun to complete, and is an ideal anger management resource for those working with young people including counsellors, therapists, social workers and school counsellors, as well as parents.

This book is Brill!!!!
I am a busy headteacher and was recommended this book by a friend to use with pupils at school. As well as being easy to read it is very accessible to adults and pupils. It is a useful and practical tool which I have used on many occasions to help children understand why they get angry and more importantly what they can do about it. There are exercises to work through, as well as strategies to put in place.
I thoroughly recommend it.

I needed help with getting KS2 children to understand their own anger. This book was just what I required. It is a short workbook style text with diagrams and lots of places for the child to write draw and reflect on their behaviour.
I went through the book with a particularly angry Y6 boy one morning. He liked it and felt it helped him. I have to say he is still not an easy person to deal with but he loved having his own book to keep and look back on.
I shared the book with a parent on another occasion, she has a child who is angry at home more than at school.
A supportive easy to complete book for 10+ year olds. Highly recommended!

this is a brilliant resource - no doubt about it, sooooo easy to use with young people - you literally open it and read- it's self explanatory and leads simply between exercises.
my only gripe is it's quite short, and would be a million times better if it came with a disk featuring the exercises to print out the pictures and scenarios - perhaps these are available on the site but ideally these would be included.

lovely concepts and easy to understand for young people.

We bought this as part of a program to assist an autistic young adult to understand emotions. Although it's not specifically aimed at this, we found it benefitial and were impressed for a number of reasons.

The book comes across as friendly and accessible, it's not too thick, no realms of text or intimidating formality. There are spaces for writing and drawing your own responses and even for drawing your own 'Anger Gremlin' which lets readers use their own creativity and expression as they work through the book.

There seems to be a purposeful direction throughout the book, using a CBT approach, so it doesn't come across as 'wishy washy' or as pop-psychology and it's presented using some visual, as well as verbal, content (e.g. an anger 'remote control') which might help visual thinkers.

It's a useful and down-to-earth book for young people or some young adults who may still benefit from its approach.

This is a must have resource. Kate Collins- Donnelly has got this book absolutely right! Quick to read, easy to understand, practical and most of all incredibly effective. Scenarios aimed at KS3 and KS4 students can be easily adapted for KS2 pupils. Young people can work through the material with pastoral staff on a 1:1 or in a small group situation. Staff knowledge has improved, pupils feel empowered and practical strategies are easy to remember and put into use. We have seen our nurture group provision go from strength to strength by putting this resource into action. When young people know that they are in charge of their anger and can change their reactions and responses to situations they feel in control. Don't be without this super, practical book!

We like the style of the book, it uses quizzes to help children work out what anger 'looks like' in them e.g. heart beating faster, using swear words etc. and the short quotes by children of different ages describing their feelings make the book real and accessible.
The book is practical and hands-on not stuffy and academic.

I work in a primary school with y6 children, some of the children i work with have problems with dealing with their anger.Starving the anger gremlin was recommended to me by a friend who also works in a school setting. Im so glad she did!!. What a brilliant book, easy to use and very appealing to children. It is already helping one child that i work with to understand his anger, where it comes from and to make that change.
A fantastic buy!!
