Product Description

Product Description

PAT testing as a business seems to be attractive to many people. Most people have come across it in their working life, it seems fairly easy to do and generates a reasonable income. It also has the added benefits of something that companies have to do (to meet their Health & Safety obligations) and has the possibility of repeat business every year. At the in-depth PAT course that we regularly run at First Stop Safety, we get many delegates intent on starting their own PAT testing business. On the course they learn all the technical skills necessary to provide the service to their customers. They also get a grounding on managing the system and the required paperwork. However there is more to running a successful PAT testing business than attending a course. A successful business needs to take many other things into consideration such as pricing, competition, marketing, customer service and the boring bits such as bookkeeping. What I have set out to do with this book is to provide a useful background to all these other activities which contribute to the success of any business. Most of this is based on 20 years of running my own business as well as many years of presenting the various PAT testing courses and listening to hundreds and thousands of delegates. Whilst it is possible to set up a PAT testing business that will generate thousands of pounds a month in income, this will need a lot of investment and employing many engineers to carry out the PAT testing service. This book is aimed more at individuals setting up a PAT testing business at a local level to generate a reasonable level of additional income. While reading this book is no guarantee of success, it will certainly help the budding entrepreneur to build a robust and successful business.

Starting and Running a PAT Testing Business
By Seggy T Segaran
ISBN 978-0-9561537-2-2

As the title would suggest this book is aimed fairly at those people who would like to set up a PAT testing business as either their sole income or as a part time enhancement to their other work. I actually fit into the latter category.

Last year I was looking round at PAT testing training partly because I had a lot of electrical equipment that I need to take to venues and have tested. Partly so I could offer it as a service to my existing customers and also to enhance my understanding of electrical safety, when I am teaching Health and Safety courses.

I managed to find out about First Stop Safety and the training that Seggy does there. I booked myself on the course and with his expert help I managed to pass with flying colours. We got a copy of the "Handbook of Portable appliance Testing" of which he is also the author, as part of the course.

When I heard that he had brought out another book on the actual running of a PAT testing business I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

I'm no reader but because it was written in a down to earth practical style it was a breeze. I already knew it is one of those businesses that doesn't cost a fortune to set up but Seggy takes you all the way through effectively holding your hand and guiding you through the process.

He doesn't stop at telling you how to do the practical side of things and mentions the importance of setting up your networking through groups like BNI (which I have since joined). There is a section on the legal bits of setting up and something that I am less good at i.e. doing the accounts through to ensuring you get paid.

I know a couple of people who have recently been made redundant and I think I'm going to let them know about this as it will help them to get back on their feet.

All in all, a well written practical book on the subject of setting up a PAT testing business. The principles of which, could also be used to set up similar ventures.

Well done Seggy! The book is value for money, a winner and does exactly what it says on the tin ;o)

Thanks

Steve

This book is extremely accessible - an easy read yet is still meaty with masses of good, practical advice and tips together with great illustrations, and summary boxes that round up the important points. The Appendices with examples of a press release, a quote, an invoice, a leaflet etc are useful to people new to business and in the body of the book there is loads of information on how to set up your business, what records to keep etc and then how to market your business and of course the PAT relevant information such as training, PAT testing equipment and tips on how your PAT business could be different and better than the rest.

It's a good read... I had the intention of skimming through but ended up reading the best part of it. It's nice and easy to read and follow which will be ideal for people who are looking at self employment for the first time.
