3.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book, long on insight but short on resolutions, 21 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This book contains many warm and thoughtful insights, despite the fact that the characters aren't particularly compelling. I suspect that many of the newspaper reviewers who praised this book with such abundance did so because of the gentle way this book flatters the "book elite" with its many references to the authors of the classical canon. It's a good book, and it's worth reading, but it may help to know in advance that you may not understand the characters at the end much more than you did at the beginning, and that the characters themselves don't seem to evolve at all within the context of their own self-involved worlds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book!, 16 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This is a wondeful book, full of wisdom, grace and insight. Schiller's story, a "Portrait of the Artist as an Old Man", is an elegy to the New York intellectuals of the '40s and '50s. But his story is only one of serveral beatifully rounded, unsentimental but generous portraits Morton graciously shares with us. Heather, Ariel, Casey, even another old man, Levin--I now know them all, and half expect to see them walking around Manhattan. And my experience of reading this book will help me to know the people I already know that much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful. A rare find., 27 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I would rather read than do anything. I spend my shopping time in bookstores. Why? Looking for a book just like this book: insights and truth, humor, pain. I finished this book at 4 a.m. wondering where on earth I'll ever find another such book. I am not the same person who began Mr. Morton's book and I want to thank him.
