As a club player approx 1650 elo, who plays both sides of the Caro-Kann I was delighted to see such an objective book. The layout is easier to follow than many books, and with a theorectical & stastical overview before detailing the main themes and ideas for both colours, you have the foundations to play the corect plan(s). If you are serious about playing the Caro-Kann or, find it is just such a tough nut to crack and want some fresh ideas there is no better book to start with.

I've read through many book on various openings and this one is definitely a favourite of mine. It's presented in a logical, easy to understand manner that makes working through the chapters an enjoyable experience. Mr Galagher gives clear explanations of stragegies behind variations with statistics to support. Importantly there are well-chosen annotated games after each variation that show theory being put into practise. I find these very useful and wonder why so many authors don't do this. I recommend this with enthusiasm to anyone who wants to take a closer look at the Caro-Kann. Even if you don't elect to adopt this as part of your opening repetoire as black, it won't be time wasted because of the amount you will learn.

if you are an advanced beginner then this is the book for you. this book will only take you so far, but i still recommend that intermediates buy it as it is a good over-view of the caro-kann defence. i certainly learned a bit from it, although, i will buying some more books on the defence. this book was a good book to start from although other books on the defence are required.
