5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect start, 18 Aug 2003
I searched long & hard for the real beginners book on chickens. The problem with some is that they focused too much on larger flocks and the problem with others is that they were so dated & old-fashioned.

"Starting with Chickens" by Katie Thear is perfect for those looking to start keeping chickens as pets or as a handy supplier of fresh eggs. It gave me all of the essential information concerning housing, choosing the breed, feeding and looking after the birds

I cannot vouch for the usefulness of this book for a more experienced chicken keeper, but for a complete novice like myself, it is fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Beginners, 12 Mar 2004
As someone who has just started on the path of keeping a few chickens in a normal domestic garden setting, I found this a really useful book. The writing is easy for the beginner to follow, and there are many useful touches - such as the list of suppliers of equipment, feed, housing etc in the back - which as a beginner will be invaluable.

Well illustrated, and excellent value - this book will encourage and motivate you while making you aware and helping with most potential problems new keepers will come across.

Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for the first timer, 12 Jul 2005

This has been an excellent book for me, as starting out with a few chickens i was looking for a book that could guide me, not overwhelm me, and i found it. It's got enough information to be helpful, but not overwhelming. Sections covering Housing, Feeding, Breeding, Rearing Chicks, Illness etc and many more interesting things too...

Recommend for the first timer...
