Does exactly what it says. Very easy to setup. It takes two cf cards. Mixed sizes work fine. Slots are numbered CF1 and CF2. This is important. The CF1 slot is the one that your computer will recognise and boot from. The second (CF2) is invisible to the bios of the machine and only gets picked up later when you are running the operating system. I found that on some laptops e.g Acer Aspire 3690 series, the second CF card is invisible all the time while on the Acer 3002 Travelmate both slots are available.
Also you can use a single CF card but it must be placed in the CF1 slot.

A quality product, but a bit pricey $$$$

Startech makes quality products, so I wasn't suprised to see a well made, heavy duty circuit board. It worked flawlessly in my stoneage Panasonic Toughbook. And, it did help speed things up. This netbook had previosly been used only to configure routers/switches via minicom... but now it needed to perform more demanding duties.
Some random stuff...
1. Make sure you are io bound: does your computer spend a significant amount of time in iowait?
2. The IDE bus is slow... and small capacity: This device, or a SSD will do nothing to overcome that.
3. Would reduced latency improve your computer: This is true for folk's that run a window manager.
4. Are you doing large amounts of disk io: If so a good solution would be to do raid0 over 2 sandisk extreme cf cards. But then you might be reaching the upper bounds of the IDE bus.
At any rate, this device did make my old laptop more usable. And, this is a quality device with a lifetime warranty. So for those reasons, I recommend this device.

This kind of adapter let's me reuse an old laptop computer with no HDD because is an IBM model. I Put Ubuntu OS to work inside the compactflash cards. And now There are 3 computers in home for a different use. The velocity read/write are low. Really I feel it's time to renew all this obsolet equipment to avoid contaminate the earth.
