Could not get this to work at all with a new Zoostorm PC with a freshly installed XP, despite hours of trying everything I could think of (don't bother posting suggestions please, I am a computer tech and know what I am doing, plus the problem is now solved anyway). It also wouldn't work in a 2 year old GigaByte Windows 7 PC.
It was, bizarrely, recognised by a six year old Dell Inspiron running Windows 8, but useless as it wasn't the machine I actually needed it in!

Three stars as it probably works with some machines, but not all. Maybe I had a duff one, but I wasn't taking chances on a direct replacement and I replaced it with a Newlink USB dual serial adapter NEWLink USB 2.0 to Serial D9 Dual Cable Adaptor - fitted and working within two minutes!

Great Value, Flawless Operation, A bit dodgy install 12 Dec. 2006

These days, you still spend over $1000 bux on a computer, and wham bam, the 9 pin serial port is GONE! GONE I TELL YOU! RS232 Lovers UNITE!! SAVE OUR COM PORTS! <--Builds picket signs, marching on the capitol.

I occasionally take work home with me and need to review programs in embedded systems. This worked flawlessly. The only issue I had, hence a lost star, was the install routine was extremely confusing. I have learned with windows to keep hitting "go" and don't waste time reading. I had to hit a dialog box which had the same message in it 7 times. Had the text changed, I would have felt a lot more comfortable. I thought I was going to be in an endless loop, then it just stopped and was fully installed on my XP system. So if you buy this, just keep hitting OK even if it looks like the program is doing the same thing over and over again. NOTE: for older programs that can only access COM1-4 (pre USB software) you will have to MANUALLY reassign your COM port to the lower numbers. Be sure to remember your reassignments. We can't use the DOS redirect command either :( (Hooray for those who remember the redirect command in DOS!)

Parallel port cable is shown wrong direction 22 Oct. 2012
By WayneF - Published on Amazon.com
The card works fine in Win7 64 bits, but the installation is very shaky. The parallel cable will not work if assembled as shown. Also the drivers on CD did not install for me, but there are drivers on the Startech that do install (installed from the Device Manager update menu).

The parallel ribbon cable is marked with red edge for pin 1, but the card is not marked, and the manual says nothing about pin 1. There is a color picture on front of the manual (on the Startech web site), same picture that is shown here on Amazon, which shows the cable orientation clearly, but the picture is wrong - parallel will not work that way.

The red edge of parallel cable must go towards the front of the card, towards the power connector, away from the rear panel. This dresses it down instead of up, but it works that way. Note this is then in agreement with the pin 1 orientation of the DB9 cable next to it. Note also on the rear of the card, the solder pad of one corner pin is square, where all the others are round. That is pin 1, and should align with the red cable end. Then it works.

Crummy install documentation, but the card works fine in Win7 64 bits.

Works as advertised 4 July 2008

My company bought some new PCs that didn't have any serial/parallel ports (but we need these for our POS equipment). This product works well (i.e. after you install it you forget it's there because it just works, month after month). I'm writing this review because it's kind of hard to find products like this for USB-only PCs, but this Startech adapter is a winner.

Great design and compatibility 6 Sept. 2012
By Andrew Belov - Published on Amazon.com

Just wrote this to assure Linux users of compatibility as there's no shortage of bug reports, patches and source tarballs on the web. This card is based on an MCS9901 chip and is picked up readily by Linux v 3.2.0 on a C216-based machine:

[ 1.579554] 0000:04:00.0: ttyS1 at I/O 0xd030 (irq = 17) is a ST16650V2
[ 1.643489] 0000:04:00.1: ttyS2 at I/O 0xd020 (irq = 18) is a ST16650V2
[ 8.587035] parport_serial 0000:04:00.2: PCI INT C -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 19
[ 8.587183] parport0: PC-style at 0xd010 (0xd000), irq 19 [PCSPP,TRISTATE]

lspci output:
04:00.0 Serial controller: NetMos Technology PCIe 9912 Multi-I/O Controller
04:00.1 Serial controller: NetMos Technology PCIe 9912 Multi-I/O Controller
04:00.2 Parallel controller: NetMos Technology PCIe 9912 Multi-I/O Controller

I'm too lazy to test CPU loads, latencies and other funny metrics this time. Needless to say, the breakout cable design is useful beyond low-profile systems!

Necessary item nowadays 2 Nov. 2009

Good thing you can still buy an item like this. Old tech is still around and this piece did the trick. Got an old parallel dongle to work straight away. Wonderful!
