This eSATA Controller Card turns a PCI Express (1x) slot into an external SATA port, to provide a quick and hassle-free external storage solution. Supporting SATA 300 (SATA II) hard drives (backward compatible with SATA /150) and data transfer rates of up to 3Gbps, this PCI Express eSATA Controller Card is the perfect solution for upgrading existing eSATA capability, or simply adding an external SATA port to a PC desktop computer. Using a native PCI Express single chipset, the controller card provides enhanced compatibility, reliability and performance for your external storage needs. The controller card also features Port Multiplier support with command based switching for connecting multiple external hard drives to a host computer through one eSATA connection. The PCI Express eSATA Controller Card also features an internal SATA port, which could be used for a conventional (internal) SATA drive installation. I got this to connect a 4 bay eSATA external box as it supports Port Multiplying.
The driver disk that comes with it seems to be generic for a lot of products as well as this card although the instructions do tell you which drivers to use it is not immediately clear as the naming does not seem to relate to the card, if you are not sure then you can download the drivers from Startech's web site.
If you are using this for external devices then make sure you move the block of jumpers over as detailed, it is set as default to use the internal connector, and remember this card only supports 1 port, either the internal or the external.
Slotted it into the PC, loaded the correct divers and plugged in my external box, a brief period of blue flashing drive lights from the box and then all the drives recognised OK.
So all in all it does what it says with no drama.

This seems to be a great little product. Installed and ran right out of the box. Caveat: due to extremely poor design, you must change four very tiny jumpers from the default internal drive to external cable. Very 1970's. Try a little switch or even dip switches. Once reconfigured, it works like a charm with my digital on the go drive (Nexto 466GB).

I was looking for a eSATA controller to convert my USB 2.0 external enclosure on my Windows Home Server over to the much faster eSATA and this card fit the bill perfectly! It supports port multiplier and as soon as I loaded the driver, and rebooted there were all my drives. Made my day.
I would have knocked off a 1/2 star for the rather antiquated jumpers, but Amazon apparently only deals in full stars. Even with the jumpers, it only took me about a minute to switch the 4 jumpers to the alternate configuration to use the external port and not the internal.
One thing to note is that the half height bracket ships in the box... VERY pleasant surprise. I was dreading having to engineer something in, but with the alternate plate in the box, I'm all set.
